The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Mets meet in game one of a three game interleague set from Citi Field in MLB action on Friday.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last four games following a 3-0 loss in the rubber match of their series against Miami on Wednesday. Joey Wendle went 2 for 2 with a walk while C.J. Cron added a double and Jesus Sucre added a base hit as well as Tampa Bay mustered up just four hits as a team in the loss. Ryan Weber took the loss after giving up two runs on four hits over five innings of work to fall to 0-1 this season. Ryne Stanek will start game one and is 1-2 with a 1.98 ERA and 33 strikeouts this season.

The New York Mets have also alternated wins and losses in each of their last four games, including a 6-3 win over Toronto in their last outing to salvage a split. Todd Frazier went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs while Brandon Nimmo, Jose Bautista, Asdrubal Cabrera and Michael Conforto each added an RBI as well to round out New York’s scoring in the win. Wilmer Flores went 2 for 4 while Kevin Plawecki went 1 for 3 with each logging a double. Corey Oswalt gave up two runs over four innings of work. Seth Lugo got the win to improve to 3-3 this season while Jeurys Familia picked up the save for his 16th save of the year. Jacob DeGrom will start game one and is 5-4 with a 1.84 ERA and 134 strikeouts this season. This will be DeGrom’s second career start against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 3-13 in their last 16 road games and 9-3 in their last 12 games overall while the under is 5-1-1 in their last 7 games against a right-handed starter. New York is 1-7 in DeGrom’s last 8 starts and 1-10 in their last 11 series opening matchups while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games against the AL East. The over is 7-0 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
Even with DeGrom on the mound, there’s no way that I’m laying this kind of juice with the Mets. Sure, they’ve picked up wins here and there, and DeGrom is the best arm they have this season. But the Mets have lost nine of the last 11 games that DeGrom has started. The Rays don’t win a ton of games and don’t win often on the road, but Tampa Bay at plus money are a better option than New York being this heavy of a favorite so I’ll take a stab at the Rays and the plus money on Friday. The under may be worth a look too.
