The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays square off in game one of a three game AL East division set from Rogers Centre in MLB action on Friday.
The New York Yankees will look to build some steam after back-to-back wins to take their series with the Atlanta Braves, including a 6-2 win in the series finale on Wednesday. Giancarlo Stanton led the Yanks by going 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs while Aaron Judge and Kyle Higashioka each contributed a solo home run. Greg Bird added an RBI as well to round out New York’s scoring in the win, while Didi Gregorius went 2 for 4 with a double and Neil Walker added a base hit as well to cap off the Yankees offense in the victory. CC Sabathia got the win to improve to 6-3 this season after giving up both runs on five hits while striking out five over six innings of work. Sonny Gray will start game one and is 5-6 with a 5.44 ERA and 73 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gray is 4-3 with a 2.71 ERA and 57 strikeouts against Toronto.

The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking to rebound after settling for a series split with the Mets, dropping the series finale by a final score of 6-3 on Friday. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. led the Jays with two RBIs, while Kendrys Morales went 3 for 4 with a solo home run and a double to round out Toronto’s scoring in the loss. Russell Martin went 3 for 3 and Yangervis Solarte added a double while Teoscar Hernandez chipped in a base hit as well in the losing effort. Marcus Stroman took the loss, falling to 1-6 this season after giving up all six runs on six hits over 4.2 innings of work. Sam Gaviglio will start the opener and is 2-2 with a 3.97 ERA and 45 strikeouts this season. This will be Gaviglio’s second career start against the Yankees.
New York is 5-11 in Gray’s last 16 division starts and 0-4 in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 11-1 in their last 12 road games against a right-handed starter. Toronto is 11-4 in their last 15 home games and 4-10 in their last 14 division matchups while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 division matchups. The under is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings between these two teams and 27-10 in the last 37 meetings between these two teams in Toronto.
You rarely get the Yankees against average at-best teams like Toronto with reasonable lines like these. However, Gray has struggled recently, giving up four or more runs in three of his last four starts, including six earned in his last start. As a matter of fact, The Yankees have been outscored 15-0 in Gray’s last two starts. On the other hand, I don’t feel like we are getting enough plus money with Toronto that just settled for a split with the brutal Mets. Instead, I’m going to side with the under as both starters threw a shutout in their last appearance against the opposition, with Gray tossing eight shutout innings in his last start against Toronto and Gaviglio throwing seven shutout innings last time against New York.
