The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox meet in game one of a mini two game interleague set from Guaranteed Rate Field in MLB action on Tuesday.

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to find some form of consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last four games, including a defeat in the rubber match of their three game series against San Francisco, losing the finale by a final score of 13-8 on Sunday. Yairo Munoz and Matt Carpenter each had three RBIs and a home run, with Munoz going 2 for 2 while Carpenter did his damage as a pinch hitter. Jose Martinez and Marcell Ozuna each had an RBI to round out St. Louis’ scoring in the loss, with Martinez going 3 for 5 at the dish. Jedd Gyorko went 2 for 5 while Paul DeJong and Harrison Bader each contributed a base hit as well. Jack Flaherty lasted just 2.1 innings in the starts, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits, not factoring in the decision, while John Brebbia ended up with the loss to fall to 1-3 this season. Miles Mikolas will start game one and is 9-3 with a 2.63 ERA and 75 strikeouts this season. This will be Mikolas’ first career start against the White  Sox.

Chicago White Sox vs. St. Louis Cardinals - 7/10/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Joe Puetz-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago White Sox will be eager to snap a five game losing streak after being swept in a four game set at the hands of Houston, dropping the series finale on Sunday by a final score of 2-1. Tim Anderson accounted for the lone run for Chicago in the loss, while Adam Engel added a double. Avisail Garcia, Jose Abreu, Kevan Smith, Leury Garcia and Yoan Moncada each added a base hit as well as Chicago mustered up just six hits as a team in the loss. Lucas Giolito absorbed the loss, falling to 5-8 this season after allowing both runs on three hits while walking and striking out three apiece over 7.1 innings of work. Dylan Covey will start game one and is 3-4 with a 5.54 ERA and 38 strikeouts this season. This will be Covey’s first career start against St. Louis.

St. Louis is 6-1 in Mikolas’ last 7 starts against a team with a losing record and 5-1 in Mikolas’ last 6 road starts while the under is 10-2-1 in their last 13 interleague games. Chicago is 0-4 in Covey’s last 4 starts and 7-21 in their last 28 series opening matchups while the over is 8-2 in their last 10 games against a team with a winning record. St. Louis is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.

I won’t lie, I expected Giolito to get lit up as he had for much of the season against the Astros, and that didn’t happen as the White Sox kept it close throughout. I’m expecting a different result on Tuesday however. Covey is back to looking like the struggling starter we had seen last season and for part of this season, with Chicago losing his last four starts as Covey has yielded 24 runs, 23 earned, in just 15 innings of work. Get that away from me. Mikolas has been extremely underrated as a member of the Cardinals’ pitching staff this season, giving up two runs or less in 12 of his last 15 starts. Given the pitching matchup alone, I think this is a game the Cardinals can take by a couple of runs, so give me St. Louis on the run line to get some extra value out of the pick.
