The New York Mets will be looking to salvage a sweep after dropping game three on Tuesday. Amed Rosario led the Mets by going 3 for 4 with a pair of triples and an RBI, while starting pitcher Drew Gagnon and Michael Conforto each added an RBI to cap off the Mets’ scoring in the loss. Wilmer Flores added a double while Jose Reyes, Jose Bautista and Dominic Smith each chipped in a base hit as well in the losing effort. Gagnon took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings of work. Jacob deGrom will start game four and is 5-4 with a 1.79 ERA and 142 strikeouts this season. In his career, deGrom is 6-1 with a 2.74 ERA and 75 strikeouts against Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is 2-6 in Velasquez’s last 8 starts and 8-2 in their last 10 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 division matchups. New York is 0-8 in deGrom’s last 8 division starts and 9-25 in their last 34 home games while the under is 13-4 in their last 17 home games against a right-handed starter. New York is 10-2 in deGrom’s last 12 starts against Philadelphia and 5-1 in his last 6 starts at home against Philadelphia.
I’ve come to accept that whether I like it or not, the Mets are going to be favorites and probably sizeable ones with deGrom on the mound as long as he is on the team. However, that doesn’t mean I’m going to be quick to jump on a struggling Mets team. After all, deGrom has struggled against the rest of the division this season, and we are getting some decent plus money with the team in far better form in Philadelphia, who have re-taken top spot in the NL East standings. Sure, the head-to-head pitching trends favor the Mets, but I think the Phillies form as a team trumps that as Philadelphia deals the Mets another blow, winning the series in the process.
