The Philadelphia Phillies and the Baltimore Orioles square off on Thursday in a makeup game from Camden Yards in MLB action on Thursday.
The Philadelphia Phillies will look to bounce back after settling for a series split with the Mets, dropping the series finale on Wednesday in 10 innings by a final score of 3-0. Cesar Hernandez went 2 for 5 for the Phils, while Andrew Knapp added a double. Odubel Herrera, Nick Williams and Maikel Franco each had a base knock as well as the Phillies put up six hits as a team in the loss. Vince Velasquez threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three, not factoring in the decision, while Mark Leiter Jr. ended up with the loss. Nick Pivetta will start this one, and is 5-7 with a 4.62 ERA and 106 strikeouts this season. This will be Pivetta’s second career start against Baltimore.

The Baltimore Orioles will look to rebound after being shut out in their series finale against the Yankees by a final score of 9-0 on Wednesday. Caleb Joseph went 2 for 3 at the dish, while Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop each added a double. Joey Rickard added a base knock as well to cap off Baltimore’s offense as the O’s put up just five hits as a team in the losing effort. Dylan Bundy took the loss, falling to 6-9 on the year after allowing five runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three over four innings of work. Kevin Gausman is starting this game and is 4-6 with a 4.11 ERA and 95 strikeouts this season. This will be Gausman’s first career start against Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is 7-3 in Pivetta’s last 10 starts against a team with a losing record and 8-2 in their last 10 games overall while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 interleague games. Baltimore is 5-16 in Gausman’s last 21 starts and 3-14 in their last 17 interleague games against a team with a winning record while the under is 23-8 in their last 31 series opening matchups. Philadelphia is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
The O’s could be worth a look here, as Philly has to travel from New York to Baltimore for a single game and then have to travel again for their last series before the all-star break, and Pivetta hasn’t been great lately. However, Pivetta held the Orioles to one run over seven innings earlier this season, and while Gausman may be one of the better arms the O’s have had this season, giving up three runs or less in each of his last six starts, it hasn’t meant much considering Baltimore has lost 9 of Gausman’s last 10 starts this season. The fact is that we are getting a very good Phillies team that’s in the hunt for their division with a low line, against a Baltimore team that’s just trying to get pieces at the trade deadline for next season and is waiting for this year to end. Give me Philadelphia here.
