The Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox meet in the opener of their four game AL East set from Fenway Park in MLB action on Thursday.
The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking to bounce back after settling for a two game split with the Atlanta Braves, losing on Wednesday by a final score of 9-5. Devon Travis led the Jays with four RBIs coming on a grand slam, while Justin Smoak added a solo home run to round out Toronto’s scoring in the loss. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Aledmys Diaz each had two hits while Teoscar Hernandez and Luke Maile each chipped in a base hit to round out Toronto’s offense in the loss. Sam Gaviglio took the loss, falling to 2-3 this season after giving up six runs on six hits in just 1.2 innings of work. J.A. Happ will start game one and is 10-5 with a 4.44 ERA and 115 strikeouts this season. In his career, Happ is 7-3 with a 3.09 ERA and 76 strikeouts against Boston.

The Boston Red Sox will look to extend their current winning streak which sits at nine games following another series sweep, this one against Texas with a 4-2 win in the series finale on Wednesday. J.D. Martinez led the BoSox with two RBIs and a double while Xander Bogaerts went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI as well. Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi and Eduardo Nunez each had two hits while Sandy Leon added a base knock as well to cap off Boston’s offense in the win. Chris Sale got the win to improve to 10-4 this season after tossing seven shutout innings, giving up just six hits while striking out 12. Craig Kimbrel recorded his 28th save of the season with four strikeouts. David Price will start game one and is 9-6 with a 4.44 ERA and 101 strikeouts this season. In his career, Price is 19-3 with a 2.46 ERA and 160 strikeouts against Toronto.
Toronto is 7-3 in Happ’s last 10 road starts and 1-5 in their last 6 division matchups while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Boston is 6-0 in their last 6 home games against a left-handed starter and 9-2 in Price’s last 11 starts while the under is 10-3-1 in their last 14 home games. Toronto is 7-19 in the last 26 meetings between these two teams and 0-4 in the last 4 meetings between the two teams in Boston.
Happ is trying to enhance his value as a trade chip for Toronto, but hasn’t done himself any favours with 13 runs allowed in just 8.1 innings in his last two starts. Price has been shaky himself, giving up 10 earned in his last two starts, so the over may be worth a look. However, Boston is red hot right now with Price on the mound who has flat out dominated Toronto in his career. I’m a Toronto fan myself and even I don’t like how this one is shaping up for the Jays. I think laying the juice with Boston is the only way to go in this one.
