The Washington Nationals and the New York Mets meet in game two of their four game NL East division set in MLB action from Citi Field on Friday.
The Washington Nationals will look to build some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last four games following a 5-4 victory in the series opener on Thursday. Anthony Rendon led the Nats by going 3 for 5 with a pair of homers and three RBIs, while Bryce Harper added a two run shot to round out Washington’s scoring in the win. Juan Soto went 2 for 5 and Trea Turner added a double while Daniel Murphy, Michael A. Taylor, Matt Wieters and starting pitcher Max Scherzer each chipped in a base hit as well in the win. Scherzer got the win to improve to 12-5 this season after giving up three runs on five hits while striking out five over seven innings of work. Ryan Madson closed out the 9th for his 4th save of the year. Tanner Roark will start game two and is 3-11 with a 4.76 ERA and 93 strikeouts this season. In his career, Roark is 7-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 77 strikeouts against the Mets.

The New York Mets will look to bounce back after narrowly dropping game one on Thursday. Jose Bautista led the way by going 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs, while Kevin Plawecki and Asdrubal Cabrera each hit a solo homer, with Cabrera going 2 for 4 with a double as well. Michael Conforto added a base knock as well to round out the Mets’ offense in the loss. Steven Matz took the loss, falling to 4-7 this season after giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out four over 6.1 innings of work. Noah Syndergaard will start game two and is 4-1 with a 3.06 ERA and 76 strikeouts this season. In his career, Syndergaard is 2-4 with a 3.53 ERA and 59 strikeouts against Washington.
Washington is 0-6 in Roark’s last 6 starts and 3-10 in their last 13 road games while the under is 6-1 in Roark’s last 7 road starts. New York is 5-2 in Syndergaard’s last 7 home starts and 7-20 in their last 27 home games while the under is 4-1-1 in Syndergaard’s last 6 starts overall. New York is 1-5 in Syndergaard’s last 6 starts against Washington and 1-4 in his last 5 starts at home against the Nationals.
I personally wouldn’t go anywhere near this game on Friday, but for the sake of a pick, Roark has had success in his career against the Mets, but he is by far the Nationals’ worst arm in their starting rotation this season, and he’s allowed four or more runs in four of his last five starts and Washington has lost each of his last six starts as a team. I have no clue what we are going to be getting from Syndergaard after a couple months on the DL, but you’d have to imagine that his return will bring some sort of energy to the Mets at least for one day. I’d lay the juice with the Mets as more of a fade from Roark, but like I said, I’m staying far away from this one.
