For the opener, the Red Sox will be bringing out LHP David Price, who has 108.0 innings, a 10-6 record, a 4.42 ERA, 109 Ks and 34 BBs to his name so far this year.
JD Martinez leads the way for the Sox offense this season, with 116 hits, 72 runs, 29 homers and 80 RBI. Mookie Betts (108 hits; 79 RBI; 23 HR; 51 RBI) and Andrew Benintendi (104 hits; 68 runs; 14 homers; 57 RBI) aren’t far behind.
Over on the Tigers’ side, they’re rolling with Matthew Boyd on Friday. Across his 98.1 innings and 4-8 record this year, Boyd has a 4.76 ERA with 87 Ks and 36 BBs.
Nick Castellanos is way out front for the Tigers this season on 115 hits, 54 runs, 15 homers and 56 RBI. Jose Iglesias is the closest Detroit player to him, with 85 hits, 29 runs and 34 RBI.
The Red Sox are 4-0 in their last four versus the AL Central and 4-0 in their last four in game one of a series. Boston is also 5-0 in Price’s last five game one starts and 10-2 in his last 12 starts overall.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 6-20 in their last 26 overall and 6-1 in Boyd’s last seven home starts. Detroit is 0-4 in their last four games following an off day and 0-5 in Boyd’s last five starts.
Price has been a little shaky lately with 15 earned runs allowed over his last three starts in a span of 14.2 innings. As for Boyd, he’s given up 25 earned runs over his last five starts and has just one quality outing in that time. I’m not thrilled about Price this year, but I think the Red Sox are firmly in control here.
