The San Diego Padres and the Philadelphia Phillies meet in game two of their three game set in MLB action on Saturday.
The San Diego Padres will look to bounce back after taking an 11-5 loss in game one on Friday. Freddy Galvis led the charge by going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Will Myers and Carlos Asuaje each had an RBI as well, with Myers going 2 for 5 while Asuaje added a double. Manuel Margot, Austin Hedges and Franmil Reyes each added a base hit as well to round out the Padres’ offense in the loss. Clayton Richard took the loss, falling to 7-9 this season after allowing seven runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three over just three innings of work. Luis Perdomo will start game two and is 1-4 with a 7.55 ERA and 26 strikeouts this season. This will be Perdomo’s first career start against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to build some steam after winning the series opener on Friday. Carlos Santana led the charge by going 1 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs, while Cesar Hernandez and Odubel Herrera each had two RBIs, with Hernandez added a double going 2 for 4. Rhys Hoskins and Scott Kingery each added an RBI while Maikel Franco, Trevor Plouffe, Andrew Knapp, Jorge Alfaro and Nick Williams each added a base hit as well to round out Philly’s offense in the win. Jake Arrieta gave up all five runs, four earned, on six hits over just 3.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Austin Davis picked up the win in relief to climb to 1-0 this season. Vince Velasquez will start game two and is 5-8 with a 4.39 ERA and 110 strikeouts this season. This will be Velasquez’s second career start against San Diego.
San Diego is 0-5 in Perdomo’s last 5 starts and 3-14 in their last 17 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Philadelphia is 2-7 in Velasquez’s last 9 starts and 11-5 in their last 16 games overall while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against the NL West. San Diego is 19-41 in the last 60 meetings between these two teams and 4-12 in the last 16 meetings between these two teams in Philadelphia.
This is one of the easier bets on Saturday’s card in my opinion. You have a Padres lineup that can’t keep runs off of the board to save their lives, starting a pitcher in Perdomo who has allowed five or more runs in three of his last four starts, going up against a Phillies lineup that’s still fighting for the division lead. Velasquez hasn’t been the most reliable hurler this season, but he was solid in his lone start before the all-star break coming off of the DL, and his lone career start against the Padres was a complete game shutout. I think backing the Phillies on the run line is the way to go here.
