The Chicago White Sox will look to win the series after dropping game three on Wednesday by a final score of 11-3. Matt Davidson cranked out a solo homer while Yoan Moncada and Avisail Garcia each had an RBI to round out the scoring for Chicago in the loss. Jose Abreu and Adam Engel each had a double with Abreu going 2 for 4 at the dish, while Leury Garcia added a base knock as well to cap off Chicago’s offense in the loss. James Shields took the loss, falling to 4-12 this season after allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out seven over just four innings of work. The Los Angeles Angels will look to salvage a series split after taking game three in emphatic fashion on Wednesday. Mike Trout led the Halos by going 3 for with a pair of home runs, a double and four RBIs. Shohei Ohtani and Albert Pujols each went yard as well, with Ohtani launching a two run shot while Pujols hit a solo homer. Kole Calhoun and Luis Valbuena each had a double and an RBI with Valbuena adding a second RBI to the cause as Andrelton Simmons added a run on the board as well to cap off the Angels’ scoring. David Fletcher added a pair of base hits as well to cap off L.A.’s offense in the win. Tyler Skaggs got the win to improve to 8-6 this season after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out nine over six innings of work. Nick Tropeano will start the finale and is 3-5 with a 4.58 ERA and 49 strikeouts this season. This will be Tropeano’s second career start against the White Sox.
Chicago is 2-12 in Covey’s last 14 road starts and 0-5 in their last 5 Thursday games while the over is 5-2 in Covey’s last 7 starts against a team with a losing record. Los Angeles is 1-4 in their last 5 games against the AL Central and 2-5 in their last 7 games overall while the over is 4-1-1 in Tropeano’s last 6 starts overall. Chicago is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 6-21 in the last 27 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
This pitching matchup screams stay away on Thursday. Sure, both had respectable starts last time out, with Covey throwing 8.1 shutout innings against the Mariners and Tropeano allowing just two runs against the Astros. However, I haven’t forgotten that Covey had that string of starts where he allowed 29 runs over five starts, and that Tropeano had given up five runs in back-to-back starts before his last outing. Furthermore, Covey gave up four runs in just 5.2 innings in his lone career start against the Angels, while Tropeano allowed six runs in 4.1 innings against the White Sox. Seems like a good spot to take the over in my opinion.
