The Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers meet in game one of a three game AL Central division set from Comerica Park in MLB action on Friday.
The Cleveland Indians will look to build some steam after avoiding a sweep with a 4-0 win in their series finale against Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Edwin Encarnacion and Yonder Alonso each had two RBIs to make up Cleveland’s scoring in the win, with Alonso belting his 16th homer of the season. Francisco Lindor went 2 for 4 and Jason Kipnis belted a triple while Michael Brantley, Melky Cabrera and Tyler Naquin each added base hit as well in the win. Trevor Bauer got the win to improve to 9-6 this season, allowing just two hits over seven shutout innings while striking out 10. Brad Hand struck out three over 1.1 perfect innings for his 1st save in an Indians uniform. Carlos Carrasco will start game one and is 12-5 with a 4.03 ERA and 120 strikeouts this season. In his career, Carrasco is 11-8 with a 3.69 ERA and 124 strikeouts against Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers will be looking to find some consistent play after alternating wins and losses in each of their last eight games, including an 8-4 win in their series finale against Kansas City on Wednesday. Jose Iglesias led the Tigers with a home run and three RBIs, while Victor Martinez had two RBIs while going 3 for 5 at the dish. Jeimer Candelario added an RBI as well while Niko Goodrum and John Hicks each had a double with Hicks going 2 for 3 at the dish. JaCoby Jones and Victor Reyes each had a base hit to cap off Detroit’s offense in the winning effort. Matt Boyd got the win to improve to 5-9 this season after giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out seven over six innings of work. Mike Fiers will start game one and is 7-6 with a 3.49 ERA and 82 strikeouts this season. In his career, Fiers is 3-2 with a 2.68 ERA and 31 strikeouts against Cleveland.
Cleveland is 6-1 in their last 7 road games and 23-9 in Carrasco’s last 32 division starts while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record. Detroit is 4-1 in Fiers’ last 5 division starts and 8-23 in their last 31 games overall while the under is 8-1-2 in Fiers’ last 11 starts overall. Cleveland is 12-2 in Carrasco’s last 14 starts against Detroit and 6-1 in Carrasco’s last 7 road starts against Detroit.
You could argue that Cleveland shouldn’t be this much of a favorite on the road, given how the Tribe struggled against Pittsburgh to start the week. Plus money is also tempting as I’ve said before, I feel the Fiers is Detroit’s best pitcher this season. However, Carrasco has been Cleveland’s best pitcher this season and has a better ERA on the road than he does at home and the Tribe have owned Detroit with Carrasco on the mound over the last couple of years. I think laying the run with Cleveland is the way to go here as I’m not trying to give up heavy juice.
