The New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in game two of their four game set from PNC Park in MLB action on Friday.

The New York Mets will look to build some steam after taking the series opener on Thursday by a final score of 12-6. Asdrubal Cabrera led the Mets with four RBIs, going 3 for 5 with a home run and two doubles, while Wilmer Flores came right behind with a homer and three RBIs. Amed Rosario, Matt den Dekker and Devin Mesoraco each had an RBI while Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo and Jose Bautista each had a double with Bautista going 2 for 6 at the plate. Jeff McNeil added a base hit as well to round out the Mets offense in the win. Steven Matz got the win to improve to 5-8 this season after giving up four runs on three hits while striking out nine over six innings of work. Jason Vargas will start game two and is 2-6 with an 8.60 ERA and 32 strikeouts this season. This will be Vargas’ second career start against Pittsburgh.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates will be looking to rebound from back-to-back losses after their defeat in the series opener last time out. Josh Harrison and David Freese each had a home run and two RBIs, while Adam Frazier added a pair of doubles and an RBI and Jordan Luplow added an RBI and a triple to cap off Pittsburgh’s scoring in the loss. Jordy Mercer added a double of his own to round out Pittsburgh’s offense as the Pirates racked up seven hits as a team in the loss. Nick Kingham took the loss, falling to 5-5 this season after allowing six runs on seven hits over just three innings of work. Ivan Nova will start game two and is 6-6 with a 4.28 ERA and 81 strikeouts this season. In his career, Nova is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA and 20 strikeouts against the Mets.

New York is 2-8 in Vargas’ last 10 starts and 3-7 in their last 10 road games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Pittsburgh is 4-1 in Nova’s last 5 starts and 13-3 in their last 16 games overall while the under is 7-3 in their last 10 home games. The over is 8-2-1 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams and 3-0-1 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams in Pittsburgh.

We saw the hangover for Pittsburgh after having their losing streak on Wednesday with the loss in the opener here, but I think this is a perfect spot for the Pirates to regroup and bounce back. Vargas will be making his first start in over a month, and even before that, he was horrendous on the mound, allowing four or more runs in five of his nine starts this season. Nova has had his ups and downs, but he’s allowed three runs or less in eight of his last ten starts. Given the pitching matchup alone, I think you have to lay the juice with the Pirates in a bounce back scenario on Friday.
