The Los Angeles Angels and the Tampa Bay Rays meet in the opener of a three game set from Tropicana Field in MLB action on Tuesday.
The Los Angeles Angels will be looking to rebound after having their four game winning streak snapped with an 8-5 loss to Seattle in their series finale on Sunday, failing to complete the sweep of the Mariners in the process. Justin Upton led the Halos by going 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs, while Albert Pujols and Andrelton Simmons each added an RBI as well in the loss. David Fletcher went 2 for 5 with a double while Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout and Ian Kinsler each had a base hit as well in the losing effort. Felix Pena took the loss, lasting just 0.1 innings after allowing seven runs on six hits. Tyler Skaggs will start game one and is 8-6 with a 2.62 ERA and 115 strikeouts this season. In his career, Skaggs is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 12 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Rays will be licking their wounds after being beat down by the Baltimore Orioles, losing the last three games of the series including an 11-5 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Jake Bauers and C.J. Cron each had a home run and two RBIs, with Cron belting out a pair of solo homers. Matt Duffy added an RBI to round out Tampa Bay’s scoring in the loss. Michael Perez went 2 for 4 while Joey Wendle and Mallex Smith each had a base hit as well in the losing effort. Yonny Chirinos took the loss, falling to 0-3 this season after allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits over just three innings of work. Ryne Stanek will start game one and is 1-3 with a 2.43 ERA and 50 strikeouts this season.
Los Angeles is 6-2 in Skaggs’ last eight starts and 4-1 in their last 5 games overall while the under is 3-0-1 in their last 4 games against the AL East. Tampa Bay is 20-7 in their last 27 home games and 8-1 in their last 9 games against a left handed starter while the under is 5-0-1 in their last 6 games against the AL West. Los Angeles is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay with plus money at home is tempting, considering how this opener strategy has worked since it was implemented. However, Skaggs has been the Angels’ best pitcher this season, and I’m not really a fan of how Stanek has pitched especially in his last outing where he allowed three runs in two innings against Baltimore. The Angels offense woke up against Seattle and I think that can carry over so I’ll back the Angels with the low line on Tuesday.
