The Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals meet in game three of their four game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Wednesday.
The Colorado Rockies will look to build some momentum after evening the series up at one win apiece following a 6-3 triumph in game two on Tuesday. Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez each had a home run and two RBIs, while Gerardo Parra and Trevor Story each went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI to round out Colorado’s scoring in the win. Ian Desmond and Nolan Arenado each added a base hit to cap off the Rockies’ offense in the victory. Jon Gray picked up the win, improving to 9-7 after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out five over 7.1 innings of work. Wade Davis closed out the 9th for his 31st save of the campaign as well. Kyle Freeland will start game three and is 9-6 with a 3.13 ERA and 100 strikeouts this season. This will be Freeland’s second career start against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be looking to rebound after dropping game two on Tuesday. Matt Carpenter had a home run and two RBIs and Tyler O’Neill went 2 for 3 at the dish while Yairo Munoz added a base knock of his own as St. Louis mustered up just four hits as a team in the losing effort. Jack Flaherty ended up with the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out seven over 5.1 innings of work to drop his record to 4-6 this season. Luke Weaver will start game three and is 6-9 with a 4.70 ERA and 103 strikeouts this season. This will be Weaver’s second career start against Colorado.
Colorado is 5-0 in Freeland’s last 5 starts and 20-7 in their last 27 games overall while the under is 7-2 in Freeland’s last 9 road starts. St. Louis is 5-2 in Weaver’s last 7 starts against a team with a winning record and 5-1 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter while the under is 5-1 in Weaver’s last 6 home starts. Colorado is 16-35 in the last 51 meetings between these two teams.
The Rockies burned me on Monday when they fell apart, but redeemed themselves with their win on Tuesday. With that said, I’m not sure why the Rockies keep getting disrespected like this. We are getting plus money with arguably the hottest team in the majors over the last most with arguably their most consistent pitcher on the mound in Freeland, who the Rockies have won his last five starts and has allowed two runs or less in seven of his last eight starts. Weaver has been better as of late, but his lone career start against Colorado ended with six earned runs allowed in just two innings of work. Not the kind of situation you want to be in when the Rockies have been rolling over the last month. St. Louis just seems lost to me, so Colorado and the plus money have to be the play on Wednesday.
