The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox meet in game one of a pivotal four game AL East division series from Fenway Park in MLB action on Thursday.
The New York Yankees will look to rebound after settling for a series split with Baltimore, dropping the series finale on Wednesday by a final score of 7-5. Gleyber Torres led the Yanks by going 2 for 4 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs while Miguel Andujar added an RBI as well to round out New York’s scoring in the loss. Didi Gregorius went 3 for 5 and Giancarlo Stanton added a double while Brett Gardner, Greg Bird and Austin Romine each contributed a base hit as well in the loss. Sonny Gray took the loss, falling to 8-8 this season after allowing all seven runs on eight hits while striking out three over 2.2 innings of work. CC Sabathia will start game one and is 6-4 with a 3.53 ERA and 85 strikeouts this season. In his career, Sabathia is 18-13 with a 4.12 ERA and 231 strikeouts against Boston.

The Boston Red Sox will come into this one rested after a day off, after settling for a series split with the Phillies, including a 3-1 loss in the series finale on Tuesday. Xander Bogaerts accounted for Boston’s lone run in the loss, while J.D. Martinez and Jackie Bradley Jr. each added a double as well. Ian Kinsler, Blake Swihart and Andrew Benintendi each had a base knock to cap off Boston’s offense in the loss. Drew Pomeranz took the loss, falling to 1-5 this season after allowing two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three over five innings of work. Brian Johnson will start game one and is 1-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 52 strikeouts this season. This will be Johnson’s first career start against the Yankees.
New York is 4-1 in Sabathia’s last 5 starts and 13-6 in their last 19 series opening matchups while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter. Boston is 43-18 in their last 61 division matchups and 38-15 in their last 53 home games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. New York is 6-1 in Sabathia’s last 7 starts against Boston and 4-1 in Sabathia’s last 5 road starts against Boston.
Johnson has the rare feat of having the Red Sox lose each of his last two starts despite not giving up an earned run and is the victim of a rarity in Boston’s season, no run support. Sabathia has been up and down this season, but he did hold Boston to just one run over seven innings in his last outing against the Red Sox, and I think this game means just a bit more to the Yankees as New York can ill afford any more slip-ups down the stretch if they want to catch Boston in the division race, so while Boston is a tough out at home, I think the Yankees surprise by drawing first blood at home on Thursday.
