Historic Wrigley Field will come alive on Thursday as the San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs kick off their weekend MLB series.

The Padres played a couple of games against the Giants this week. San Diego lost both of those 3-2 and 5-3.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Taking the mound for the Padres on Thursday will be Robbie Erlin. In his 59.2 innings and 1-3 mark this year, Erlin has a 3.47 ERA with 50 Ks and six walks.

Eric Hosmer tops the Padres hitters this year with 104 hits, 46 runs, 10 homers and 43 RBI. Second is Freddy Galvis, with 94 hits, 34 runs and 41 RBI to his name so far.

Over on the Cubs’ side, they just finished up against the Pirates. Chicago lost 5-4 on Tuesday, then in Wednesday’s game, they won 9-2.

Chicago will be going with Mike Montgomery on Thursday. Across 87.0 innings and a 4.03 ERA this year, Montgomery has a 4.03 ERA with 54 Ks and 28 BBs.

The Cubs’ lead hitter is Javier Baez, who came into the Pittsburgh finale on 116 hits, 66 runs, 22 homers and 82 RBI. On Wednesday, Baez had two hits, a run and an RBI.

The Padres are 17-35 in their last 52 overall and 2-8 in their last 10 Thursday games. San Diego is 0-5 in Erlin’s last five road starts and 0-4 in their last four versus the NL Central.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are 41-14 in their last 56 Thursday games and 2-5 in their last seven in game one of a series. Chicago is 0-4 in Montgomery’s last four starts and 5-2 in his last seven starts versus the NL WEst.

It will be interesting to see what Erlin can do over extended innings, as he hasn’t allowed a run over his last four relief appearances—a span of 9.1 innings. As for Montgomery, he’s coughed up ten earned over his last three starts, with nine of those coming in two games. I don’t think Erlin will go very deep here, but it might be just enough to give the Padres a push as a value pick. I’ll go San Diego.
