The Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets meet in game one of their four game NL East division set from Citi Field in MLB action on Thursday.
The Atlanta Braves had an extra day of rest after having their series finale with Miami postponed due to rain, handing the Braves a two game sweep following an 11-6 win on Tuesday. Kurt Suzuki led the Braves by going 1 for 5 with a double and three RBIs, while Nick Markakis and Ronald Acuna Jr. each had a home run and two RBIs. Johan Camargo added a solo homer while Dansby Swanson had a double and an RBI. Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman each had an RBI as well to round out Atlanta’s scoring while Ender Inciarte went 4 for 5 with a double to cap off the Braves’ offense in the win. Kolby Allard picked up his first career hit but also picked up the win on the mound, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits over five innings of work. Mike Foltynewicz will start game one and is 7-7 with a 3.04 ERA and 133 strikeouts this season. In his career, Foltynewicz is 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA and 13 strikeouts against the Mets.

The New York Mets will look to bounce back after dropping their series finale with the Nationals by a final score of 5-3 on Wednesday. All of the Mets’ damage on the scoreboard was done with the home run, as Jose Reyes went 2 for 3 with a pair of solo homers while Wilmer Flores added a solo jack of his own. Michael Conforto chipped in a double while Devin Mesoraco and Amed Rosario each added a pair of base hits to round out the Mets’ offense in defeat. Noah Syndergaard took the loss, falling to 6-2 this season after giving up three runs on six hits while striking out four over seven innings of work. Jason Vargas will start the opener and is 2-6 with an 8.36 ERA and 35 strikeouts this season. In his career, Vargas is 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA and 9 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 4-11 in Foltynewicz’s last 15 road starts and 7-2 in their last 9 division matchups while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record. New York is 0-4 in Vargas’ last 4 starts and 9-22 in their last 31 home games while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games overall. Atlanta is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams and 13-5 in the last 18 meetings between these two teams in New York.
The plus money is tempting with a home underdog, and given that Foltynewicz has struggled lately, allowing four or more runs in each of his last four starts. However, there’s simply no backing the Mets right now as it just doesn’t matter who is starting on the mound. It doesn’t help that it’s Vargas pitching, who has been below average for much of the season, the Mets are just riddled with injuries and waved the white flag a while ago. I have to lay the juice with Atlanta as more of a fade from New York here.
