The Kansas City Royals and the Minnesota Twins meet in game one of their three game AL Central division set in MLB action from Target Field in MLB action on Friday.
The Kansas City Royals will look to rebound after failing to complete the sweep of the White Sox, losing the series finale on Thursday by a final score of 6-4. Whit Merrifield led KC by hitting a pinch-hit three run home run, while Rosell Herrera added the other Kansas City RBI in the losing effort. Alcides Escobar went 2 for 4 with a double while Brett Phillips added a two-bagger of his own. Adalberto Mondesi, Lucas Duda and Hunter Dozier each added a base knock to cap off the Royals’ offense in defeat. Brad Keller gave up two runs on five hits while striking out nine over 6.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Jason Adam took the loss, falling to 0-3 on the year. Heath Fillmyer will start game one and is 0-1 with a 3.29 ERA and 15 strikeouts this season. This will be Fillmyer’s first career start against Minnesota.

The Minnesota Twins will also be looking to bounce back after losing the rubber match of their three game series with the Cleveland Indians by a final score of 2-0 on Wednesday. Jorge Polanco went 2 for 4 and Joe Mauer added a triple while Miguel San and Max Kepler each contributed a base hit as the Twins cranked out just five hits as a team in the loss. Adalberto Mejia threw five shutout innings, allowing just one hit but not factoring in the decision while Matt Magill took the loss to fall to 2-2 this season. Jake Odorizzi will start game one and is 4-7 with a 4.58 ERA and 118 strikeouts this season. In his career, Odorizzi is 2-4 with a 4.29 ERA and 42 strikeouts against Kansas City.
Kansas City is 6-2 in their last 8 division matchups and 6-2 in their last 8 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 9-4 in their last 13 series opening matchups. Minnesota is 2-6 in Odorizzi’s last 8 division starts and 1-5 in their last 6 games overall while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 division matchups. Kansas City is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
The Royals are still a team that you make money fading more often than not, but you can’t look away from the fact that KC has actually played decent baseball since the all-star break. Minnesota should be the favorite here, but Odorizzi has allowed five runs in two of his last three starts. Granted, the one start sandwiched in the middle was one where he held these same Royals to just two runs, one earned, over six innings of work. Fillmyer has pitcher well, giving up no more than three earned in any of his starts this season, so while I’m staying away from this game personally, you wouldn’t be crazy for maybe putting something small on the Royals.
