The San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs meet in the finale of their four game set from Wrigley Field in MLB action on Sunday.
The San Diego Padres will look to rebound and salvage a series split following a second straight 5-4 loss on Saturday. Austin Hedges led the Padres with two RBIs, going 1 for 3 with a home run. Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe each added a double and an RBI while Travis Jankowski and Eric Homser each chipped in a base hit as well to round out San Diego’s offense as the Padres mustered up just five hits as a team in the loss. Walker Lockett took the loss, falling to 0-2 this season after giving up all five runs on nine hits while striking out six over five innings of work. Joey Lucchesi will start game four and is 5-6 with a 3.74 ERA and 78 strikeouts this season. This will be Lucchesi’s first career start against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs will look to finish strong and win the set following their win in game three on Saturday. Anthony Rizzo led Chicago by going 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs, while Kyle Schwarber added a solo home run and a double as well. Jason Heyward and Addison Russell each chipped in an RBI to round out Chicago’s scoring in the win, while Ben Zobrist added a double. Javier Baez and Ian Happ each contributed a base hit to round out the Cubbies’ offense in victory. Kyle Hendricks got the win to climb to 8-9 this season after allowing four runs on five hits while striking out seven over 5.2 innings of work, and Pedro Strop struck out a pair in the 9th for his 7th save of the season. Jon Lester will start game four and is 12-4 with a 3.22 ERA and 99 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lester is 3-1 with a 3.28 ERA and 35 strikeouts against San Diego.
San Diego is 2-6 in Lucchesi’s last 8 starts and 6-21 in their last 27 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games overall. Chicago is 33-6 in Lester’s last 39 starts against a team with a losing record and 5-0 in Lester’s last 5 starts against the NL West while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 home games. Chicago is 4-0 in Lester’s last 4 starts against San Diego.
Lester hasn’t looked like himself lately, allowing four or more runs in three of his last five starts. Lucchesi is coming off of a game where he allowed five runs in 4.1 innings of work, but the difference for me is that Lester has a more consistent offense to back him up. The Padres have looked brutal and have fallen apart over the last month and losing one run games like this when you know you had a chance to win both times can be mentally draining. I like Lester to bounce back here and to negate the heavy juice I’ll back the Cubs on the run line.
