The St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins square off in game one of a three game set from Marlins Park in MLB action on Monday.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be looking to build some steam after winning their series with the Pirates following a 2-1 win in the series finale on Sunday. Matt Carpenter hit a solo home run and Jedd Gyorko added an RBI as well to round out St. Louis’ scoring in the win. Yadier Molina and Jose Martinez each added a pair of base hits while Kolten Wong, Greg Garcia and starting pitcher Jack Flaherty added base hits as well in the winning effort. Flaherty got the win on the mound to climb to 5-6 this season after throwing six shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out seven. Bud Norris struck out a pair in the 9th for his 21st save of the season. Luke Weaver will start game one and is 6-9 with a 4.75 ERA and 106 strikeouts this season. This will be Weaver’s first career start against Miami.

Miami Marlins vs. St. Louis Cardinals - 8/6/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Joe Puetz-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins will be out to snap a six game losing streak after being swept for a second consecutive series, this time ending up on the wrong side of a four game sweep at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies, including a 5-3 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Derek Dietrich led the Fish with two RBIs, going 2 for 5 with a home run while Justin Four added a solo shot of his own to round out the scoring for the Marlins in the loss. Brian Anderson went 3 for 5 while Martin Prado, Bryan Holaday and Isaac Galloway each had a base hit in the loss. Dan Straily gave up two runs on one hit while walking five and striking out seven over 5.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Drew Steckenrider picked up the loss to fall to 3-2 this season. Wei-Yin Chen will start game one and is 3-8 with a 5.86 ERA and 62 strikeouts this season. In his career, Chen is 0-0 with a 5.23 ERA and 7 strikeouts against St. Louis.

St. Louis is 11-5 in Weaver’s last 16 road starts and 4-0 in their last 4 games against a left-handed starter while the over is 6-2 in Weaver’s last 8 starts. Miami is 2-5 in Chen’s last 7 starts and 0-6 in their last 6 games overall while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 home games. St. Louis is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams in Miami.

I counted the Cardinals out in Sunday’s finale against Pittsburgh and it blew up right in my face. And while I haven’t been the biggest supporter of Weaver, he’s a better option than Chen who allowed five runs in his last start. Long story short, we are getting a reasonable line with the Cardinals, albeit on the road, to fade a Marlins team that’s struggling right now and is just counting down the days until the end of the season. I’ll lay the juice with the better team here and that’s St. Louis.
