The Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres meet in game one of their three game set from Petco Park in MLB action on Friday.
The Philadelphia Phillies come into this game looking to rebound after losing the rubber match of their series with Arizona on Wednesday by a final score of 6-0. Cesar Hernandez led the Phils with two hits while Roman Quinn added a pinch-hit double and Carlos Santana chipped in a base hit as well as the Phillies mustered up just four hits as a team in the losing effort. Vince Velasquez took the loss, falling to 8-9 this season after allowing four runs on six hits over four innings of work. Zach Eflin will start game one and is 8-3 with a 3.61 ERA and 78 strikeouts this season. This will be Eflin’s first career start against San Diego.

The San Diego Padres will be looking to keep their momentum going after winning the rubber match of their series with the Phillies following an 8-4 victory on Thursday. Hunter Renfroe led the Padres with four RBIs, going 2 for 4 with a home run and a double. Franmil Reyes went 3 for 5 with a solo home run and a double while Freddy Galvis added a solo home run of his own in the win. Jose Pirela added a double and an RBI while Travis Jankowski chipped in an RBI as well to round out San Diego’s scoring in the win. Cory Spangenberg, Carlos Asuaje and starting pitcher Robbie Erlin each contributed a base hit to round out the Padres’ offense in the victory. Robbie Erlin gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out three, not factoring in the decision. Kirby Yates picked up the win to improve to 4-0 this season. Jacob Nix will be making his major league debut in this one and was 3-3 with a 1.84 ERA and 44 strikeouts between AA and AAA this season.
Philadelphia is 7-3 in Eflin’s last 10 starts and 6-2 in their last 8 games overall while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 road games. San Diego is 1-11 in their last 12 home games against a right-handed starter and 5-16 in their last 21 home games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Philadelphia is 42-20 in the last 62 meetings between these two teams and 36-17 in the last 53 meetings between these two teams in San Diego.
Not only are we getting the better team with a low line, but we are getting a good price to fade a Padres team that still isn’t a good team, despite winning three of their last four games, and is throwing a pitcher making his major league debut in this one. Eflin has allowed three runs or more in each of his last four starts, but is still the better pitcher here with the better offense behind him. Give me the Phillies to draw first blood on Friday.
