The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants meet in the finale of their four game set from AT&T Park in MLB action on Sunday.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to win the set after taking a 2-1 lead in the series with a 4-0 shutout win in game three on Saturday. Josh Bell led the Pirates by going 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Corey Dickerson added an RBI to round out the scoring for the Bucs in the win. Elias Diaz had two hits while Gregory Polanco, David Freese and Jordy Mercer each added a base knock to round out Pittsburgh’s offense in the win. Trevor Williams got the win to improve to 10-8 this season after tossing seven shutout frames, allowing just five hits en route to the win. Joe Musgrove will start the finale and is 4-6 with a 3.41 ERA and 56 strikeouts this season. This will be Musgrove’s first career start against San Francisco.

The San Francisco Giants will look to battle back and salvage a series split after dropping game three on Saturday. Buster Posey and Evan Longoria each went 2 for 4 while Austin Slater and Alen Hanson each had a base hit as well as none of San Fran’s six base hits went for extra bases in the loss. Ty Blach took the loss, falling to 6-7 this season after allowing all four runs on four hits while striking out five over four innings of work. Dereck Rodriguez will start game four and is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA and 61 strikeouts this season. This will be Rodriguez’s first career start against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 3-7 in Musgrove’s last 10 starts and 18-8 in their last 26 games overall while the over is 21-8 in their last 29 games against the NL West. San Francisco is 2-8 in their last 10 home games and 7-2 in Rodriguez’s last 9 starts while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against the NL Central. Pittsburgh is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams in San Francisco.
You could make a case for Rodriguez as the NL Rookie of the Year with the year he’s had so far, but the fact is that we are getting the team playing better baseball with the lower juice here. Sure, Musgrove is coming in on back-to-back losses, but it’s not often you lose back-to-back outings after allowing just one earned in each of those two games. San Francisco is struggling right now and I expect the Pirates to finally get Musgrove some run support so I’ll back Pittsburgh here.
