The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Minnesota Twins lock up for the opener of a mini two game interleague set from Target Field in MLB action on Tuesday.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to rebound after settling for a series split in their four game set with San Francisco following a 4-3 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Starling Marte led the Pirates with a double and two RBIs while Elias Diaz added a two-bagger and an RBI of his own. Josh Bell also added a double while Jordy Mercer chipped in a base hit to cap off Pittsburgh’s offense as the Pirates put up just four hits as a team in the losing effort. Joe Musgrove took the loss, falling to 4-7 this season after allowing all four runs, three earned on seven hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Jameson Taillon will start game one and is 9-8 with a 3.63 ERA and 119 strikeouts this season. This will be Taillon’s second career start against Minnesota.

The Minnesota Twins will look to rebound after a second straight series loss following a 4-2 loss to the Tigers in their series finale on Sunday. Max Kepler hit a solo homer while Johnny Field added an RBI as well in the loss. Mitch Garver added a triple while Logan Forsythe and Jorge Polanco added a base hit as well to round out Minny’s offense as the Twins put up just four hits as a team in the losing effort. Kohl Stewart took the loss, falling to 0-1 after allowing three runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings of work. Jake Odorizzi will start game one and is 4-7 with a 4.50 ERA and 120 strikeouts this season. This will be Odorizzi’s second career start against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 4-1 in Taillon’s last 5 starts and 19-9 in their last 28 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the AL Central. Minnesota is 1-6 in Odorizzi’s last 7 starts against a team with a winning record and 0-6 in their last 6 games against the NL Central while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. The over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams and 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Minnesota.
Minnesota has been frustrating to back this season, as this is a team that has a lot of talent, but just can’t put it together when it counts and drop series that they shouldn’t lose, to teams like Detroit this past weekend. Pittsburgh has been one of the surprises over the last month or so, and are making a series push for the wild card. Taillon has been solid for the Pirates this season and while plus money with a home dog is tempting, the Pirates are just the better team with an advantage on the mound, so I’ll lay the juice with Pittsburgh to draw first blood on Tuesday.
