We have some interleague MLB action from Citizen’s Bank Park on Tuesday as the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies begin a two game series.
The Boston Red Sox will look to stay hot after completing the four game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday with a 4-1 win. Steve Pearce hit a solo homer while Mookie Betts added a double and an RBI and Jackie Bradley Jr. went 2 for 4 with an RBI. J.D. Martinez went 2 for 4 with a double while Eduardo Nunez, Rafael Devers and Brock Holt each added a base hit to cap off Boston’s offense in the win. Chris Sale got the win on the mound, improving to 12-4 this season after throwing five shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 12. Craig Kimbrel closed out the 9th with a trio of strikeouts for his 35th save of the season. Rick Porcello will start game one and is 14-5 with a 4.17 ERA and 140 strikeouts this season. In his career, Porcello is 1-1 with a 5.50 ERA and 11 strikeouts against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will be looking to rebound after losing their series finale with the San Diego Padres, following a 9-3 loss on Sunday. Nick Williams and Carlos Santana each had a double and an RBI while Maikel Franco went 2 for 4 and Justin Four and Cesar Hernandez each had a base hit as Philly put out just six hits as a team in the loss. Jake Arrieta took the loss, falling to 9-7 this season after giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out four over five innings of work. Nick Pivetta will start game one and is 7-9 with a 4.51 ERA and 147 strikeouts this season. This will be Pivetta’s second career start against Boston.
Boston is 43-19 in their last 62 road games and 41-13 in their last 54 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the NL East. Philadelphia is 11-5 in Pivetta’s last 16 home starts and 5-1 in their last 6 games against the AL East while the under is 11-2-1 in their last 14 games overall. Boston is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams
The plus money with Philadelphia is tempting considering the Phillies are in the heat of their division race, took two of three from Boston at Fenway earlier this season and Pivetta has pitched better lately while Porcello is fresh off of a start against Toronto in which he allowed seven runs. However, I can’t back the Phillies until I see signs that they’ve turned it around after a disappointing showing over the last week. Boston and a reasonable line is tempting as well, even on the road, but I can’t trust Porcello with his inflated ERA. I think this is a good spot to side with the over as I can see this one hitting double digits.
