The Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins square off in game one of their four game AL Central division set in MLB action from Target Field on Thursday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to bounce back after losing the rubber match of their series with the White Sox following a 6-5 defeat in the series finale on Wednesday. Nick Castellanos went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Grayson Greiner went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Mikie Mahtook and Jose Iglesias each added an RBI as well in the losing effort. Niko Goodrum, Ronny Rodriguez and Victor Martinez each contributed a base hit as well in the loss. Jordan Zimmermann took the loss, falling to 5-5 this season after allowing all six runs on nine hits while striking out four over five innings of work. Francisco Liriano will start game one and is 3-7 with a 4.42 ERA and 76 strikeouts this season. In his career, Santana is 3-2 with a 5.58 ERA and 33 strikeouts against Minnesota.

The Minnesota Twins will look to stay hot after completing the two game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates following a 6-4 win in the series finale on Wednesday. Logan Forsythe led the Twins by going 2 for 3 with three RBIs, while Bobby Wilson added a home run and two RBIs. Jorge Polanco added an RBI to round out the scoring for Minny in the win, while Miguel San and Max Kepler each hit a double in the win. Eddie Rosario and Jake Cave each had a base knock as well to round out Minnesota’s offense in the win. Jose Berrios gave up all four runs, three earned, on seven hits over 3.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Gabriel Moya got the win to improve to 3-0 this season while Trevor Hildenberger locked up his 3rd save of the season. Ervin Santana will start game one and is 0-1 with a 6.53 ERA and 14 strikeouts this season. In his career, Santana is 10-6 with a 3.56 ERA and 129 strikeouts against Detroit.
Detroit is 2-8 in Liriano’s last 10 starts and 15-41 in their last 56 road games while the under is 8-2-1 in their last 11 games overall. Minnesota is 10-1 in their last 11 home games against a team with a losing record and 1-4 in their last 5 division matchups while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 division matchups. Detroit is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 17-6 in the last 23 meetings between these two teams in Minnesota.
The Twins are the better team in my opinion, and you have to think that Minnesota wants some measure of revenge after Detroit took two of the three game just this past weekend. However, Santana hasn’t looked good this season and is fresh off of his last start against these same Tigers in which he allowed five runs over six innings of work. On the other hand, Liriano is just 1-5 away from home this season. Giving the pitching matchup and the fact that we are getting a decent total, I think the over is the way to go here.
