The Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins meet in game three of their four game AL Central division set from Target Field in MLB action on Saturday.

The Detroit Tigers will look to bounce back after their losing streak hit four games with a 5-4 loss in game two on Friday. Victor Martinez went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI while Nick Castellanos and Ronny Rodriguez each had an RBI as well in the losing effort. James McCann went 2 for 4 while Jeimer Candelario and Niko Goodrum each added a double. Jim Adduci added a base knock of his own to round out Detroit’s offense in the losing effort. Matt Boyd took the loss, falling to 7-11 this season after allowing four runs on four hits while striking out seven over 6.1 innings of work. Ryan Carpenter will start game three and is 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA and 7 strikeouts this season. This will be Carpenter’s first career start against Minnesota.

Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Twins will look to keep the ball rolling after their victory in game two on Saturday. All of Minnesota’s damage on the scoreboard came with the long ball as Joe Mauer launched a pinch-hit three run home run that turned out to be the game winner, while Tyler Austin and Eddie Rosario each had a solo shot. Jake Cave added a base hit of his own to round out the Twins’ offense as Minny had just five hits as a team in the win. Kyle Gibson got the win after allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out three over seven innings of work to improve to 7-9 this season. Kohl Stewart will start game three and is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA and 1 strikeout this season. This will be Stewart’s second career start against Detroit.

Detroit is 15-42 in their last 57 road games and 16-35 in their last 51 games overall while the over is 3-0-1 in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record. Minnesota is 20-7 in their last 27 home games and 11-1 in their last 12 home games against a team with a losing record while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 division matchups. Detroit is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Minnesota.

The Tigers got the upper hand on Stewart in his last time on the mound, but that was his major league debut so I’m expecting the jitters to be gone for this one. The fact is that the Tigers continue to implode and find different ways to lose games. One night it’s a blowout, and the next it’s a total collapse like Friday’s game. If the Twins want any hope at playing competitive baseball in September, they need as many wins as they can get to finish this month and I think they add another with a victory on Saturday.
