The Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins face off in the finale of their four game AL Central division set in MLB action from Target Field on Sunday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to salvage a series split after winning game three on Saturday by a final score of 7-5. Mikie Mahtook led the Tigers with four RBIs coming on a three run home run and a bases loaded HBP. Ronny Rodriguez added a two-run double while Jim Adduci and Jeimer Candelario each had a double, with Adduci going 2 for 5 at the plate. Victor Reyes added a base hit as well to round out Detroit’s offense in the win. Ryan Carpenter got the win to improve to 1-1 this season after giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out three over 5.1 innings of work. Shane Greene got his 26th save of the season by closing out 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. Jacob Turner will start game four and is 0-1 with a 20.25 ERA ad 3 strikeouts this season. This will be Turner’s first career start against Minnesota.

The Minnesota Twins will look to bounce back and win the series after dropping game three on Saturday. All of Minnesota’s offense on the board was done with the long ball as Mitch Garver hit a two run home run, while Joe Mauer and Tyler Austin each had three hits with a solo home run. Miguel Sano went 2 for 4 with a solo home run to round out the scoring for the Twins in the loss, while Jorge Polanco added a double and Eddie Rosario added a base hit of his own in the defeat. Tyler Duffey ended up with the loss, falling to 1-2 this season after 2.1 innings of relief. Jake Odorizzi will start game four and is 5-7 with a 4.44 ERA and 129 strikeouts this season. In his career, Odorizzi is 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA and 32 strikeouts against Detroit.
Detroit is 2-5 in their last 7 road games against a team with a losing record and 16-36 in their last 52 games overall while the over is 6-0-1 in their last 7 games overall. Minnesota is 4-0 in Odorizzi’s last 4 home starts and 12-3 in their last 15 home games against a team with a losing record while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. The under is 10-5 in the last 15 meetings between these two teams.
Odorizzi has been pitching better for the Twins lately, but I’ve given up on trying to figure out the Twins. They’re the better team between the two, but when I back them, like I did on Saturday, they go ahead and put up a stinker. On the other hand, I’m not putting any faith in a Tigers squad that’s struggled to put wins together over the last couple of months on a consistent basis. Turner hasn’t helped the cause, as he gave up seven runs, five earned, in one inning in his lone start for Detroit this season. I’ll side with Minnesota to win the series but the over may be the better play here.
