The Houston Astros and the Seattle Mariners meet in game one of a three game AL West division set from Safeco Field in MLB action on Monday.
The Houston Astros will look to build some momentum after avoiding the sweep at the hands of Oakland following a 9-4 win in the series finale on Sunday. Yuli Gurriel led the ‘Stros with a home run and three RBIs, while Alex Bregman went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Marwin Gonzalez and Martin Maldonado each had a solo home run, with Maldonado going 3 for 4 with a triple and a double as well in the win. George Springer added an RBI of his own to round out the scoring for Houston in the win, while Carlos Correa and Tyler White each added a base hit as well in the winning effort. Justin Verlander got the win to improve to 12-8 this season after allowing all four runs on seven hits while striking out six over 5.1 innings of work. Gerrit Cole will start game one and is 11-5 with a 2.71 ERA and 219 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cole is 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA and 24 strikeouts against Seattle.

The Seattle Mariners will look to bounce back after dropping the rubber match of their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers in disappointing fashion by a final score of 12-1 on Sunday. Ryon Healy went 2 for 4 with an RBI while Kyle Seager added a double. Mitch Haniger and Robinson Cano each added a base hit as well to round out the offense for the M’s in the losing effort. Roenis Elias took the loss, falling to 2-1 this season after allowing five runs on seven hits over three innings of work. Felix Hernandez will start the opener and is 8-11 with a 5.62 ERA and 101 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hernandez is 4-6 with a 4.27 ERA and 68 strikeouts against Houston.
Houston is 18-7 in Cole’s last 25 starts and 37-16 in their last 53 road games while the under is 4-0-1 in Cole’s last 5 road starts. Seattle is 0-5 in Hernandez’s last 5 starts and 2-6 in their last 8 home games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 series opening matchups. Houston is 10-2 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams in Seattle.
Cole has struggled against the Mariners over the last few weeks, going 0-2 with six runs allowed in 13 innings of work. However, Cole bounced back against Colorado and is still one of the best arms in the AL this season. Hernandez is back in the Mariners’ rotation and will want to put forth a good effort to reclaim a spot as a starter. The issue is that the Mariners can’t keep runs off of the board, and King Felix is 0-5 with a 7.36 ERA over his last six starts. While the Mariners may need this game, the Astros are trying to pull away in the division race and I think they add some separation with a win in the opener on Monday.
