The Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers meet in game one of a two game interleague set from Comerica Park in MLB action on Tuesday.
The Chicago Cubs will look to bounce back after settling for a series split with the Pittsburgh Pirates, after a 2-1 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Kyle Schwarber’s solo home run accounted for all of Chicago’s scoring in the loss, while Javier Baez went 2 for 5 with a double. Addison Russell and Jason Heyward each added a double while Tommy La Stella, Anthony Rizzo and starting pitcher Jose Quintana each added a base hit as well in the losing effort. Quintana gave up one run on four hits over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Brandon Kintzler gave up the walk-off RBI to take the loss, falling to 1-3 this season. Kyle Hendricks will start game one and is 9-9 with a 4.11 ERA and 123 strikeouts this season. This will be Hendricks’ second career start against Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers will look to rebound after losing their series with the Twins following a 5-4 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Jim Adduci went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs while Niko Goodrum added an RBI as well in the loss. Jeimer Candelario and Victor Martinez each added a double while Jose Iglesias, Nick Castellanos and Victor Reyes each added a base hit as well in the defeat. Alex Wilson ended up with the loss, falling to 1-4 this season. Jordan Zimmermann will start game one and is 5-5 with a 4.36 ERA and 78 strikeouts this season. In his career, Zimmermann is 1-5 with a 4.58 ERA and 51 strikeouts against the Cubs.
Chicago is 4-0 in Hendricks’ last 4 starts and 7-1 in their last 8 games against the AL Central while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 road games. Detroit is 1-5 in Zimmermann’s last 6 starts and 3-10 in their last 13 games against the NL Central while the over is 5-1-1 in their last 7 games overall. Chicago is 4-12 in the last 16 meetings between these two teams and 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Detroit.
The Cubs’ performance over the weekend can’t continue if they’re going to win games heading into September, as Chicago scored just one run in each of their four games against Pittsburgh over the weekend. However, playing Detroit should help with that as the Tigers are having trouble keeping runs off of the board and that includes Zimmermann who is off of a start in which he allowed six runs in five innings of work and has had his share of struggles in his career against the Cubs. All in all, the Cubs are just the better team here and should take game one easily.
