The Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins meet in the opener of a four game NL East division set from Marlins Park in MLB action on Thursday.
The Atlanta Braves will look to keep their momentum going after completing a three game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, including a 2-1 win in the series finale on Wednesday. Ronald Acuna Jr. led the Braves with a solo home run while Freddie Freeman added an RBI of his own despite going hitless in 4 plate appearances. Ender Inciarte and Dansby Swanson each added a base hit as Atlanta mustered up just three hits as a team in the win. Julio Teheran got the win to improve to 9-7 this season after allowing the lone run on two hits while striking out five over seven innings of work. Sean Newcomb will start game one and is 10-6 with a 3.73 ERA and 123 strikeouts this season. In his career, Newcomb is 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA and 23 strikeouts against Miami.

The Miami Marlins will look to build some steam after winning three of their last four games, including a 9-3 win in their series finale with the Yankees to salvage a series split with the Bronx Bombers. Miguel Rojas led the Fish with three RBIs while JT Riddle added two RBIs with Rojas and Riddle each belting a home run. Derek Dietrich and Yadiel Rivera each had a double and an RBI while Starlin Castro and Austin Dean each added an RBI to finish off Miami’s scoring in the win. Brian Anderson and Magneuris Sierra each had two hits while Rafael Ortega added a base hit of his own to round out Miami’s offense in the winning effort. Trevor Richards gave up two runs on three hits while striking out nine, not factoring in the decision. Jarlin Garcia got the win to improve to 2-2 this season. Elisier Hernandez will start the opener and is 2-6 with a 5.08 ERA and 39 strikeouts this season. This will be Hernandez’s first career start against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 6-0 in Newcomb’s last 6 division starts and 36-15 in their last 51 division matchups while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. Miami is 0-4 in Hernandez’s last 4 starts and 4-13 in their last 17 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 division matchups. Atlanta is 4-0 in Newcomb’s last 4 starts against Miami.
I can understand why someone would be tempted with the plus money, as Miami is at home and the Marlins just held their own against the Yankees, along with the fact that Newcomb has allowed 12 runs in his last two starts covering just 9.1 innings of work. However, Newcomb is also 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA this season against Miami, including allowing just one run in 12 innings at Marlins Park this season. I think the sweep over the Pirates helped the Braves get some of their mojo back and I think Newcomb finally bounces back with a strong start here so I’ll side with the Braves to get the job done on Thursday.
