The New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs meet in game one of their three game set from Wrigley Field in MLB action on Monday.
The New York Mets will look to rebound after failing to complete the sweep of the Washington Nationals with a 15-0 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Jeff McNeil, Jay Bruce and Austin Jackson each added a base hit as the Mets mustered up just three hits as a team in the losing effort with the rest of the team going 0 for 20 with 5 strikeouts. Steven Matz took the loss, falling to 5-11 this season despite giving up just one run on five hits while striking out seven over seven innings of work. Noah Syndergaard will start game one and is 9-3 with a 3.38 ERA and 111 strikeouts this season. In his career, Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA and 22 strikeouts against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs will look to keep their momentum going after making it five wins in a row and completing the four game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds with a 9-0 win in the series finale on Sunday. David Bote led the Cubs with three RBIs, going 2 for 4 with a home run, while Kyle Schwarber and Jason Heyward each had two RBIs, with Schwarber belting a home run while Heyward went 4 for 4 with a triple. Willson Contreras added an RBI of his own to round out Chicago’s scoring in the win. Daniel Murphy and Anthony Rizzo each went 2 for 4 with a double, with Rizzo putting up a double with both hits. Javier Baez and Albert Almora Jr. each had a base hit as well to cap off Chicago’s offense in victory. Kyle Hendricks got the win to improve to 10-10 this season after tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five. Jon Lester will start the opener and is 14-5 with a 3.64 ERA and 116 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lester is 6-1 with a 3.26 ERA and 45 strikeouts against the Mets.
New York is 5-2 in Syndergaard’s last 7 starts and 5-12 in their last 17 games against the NL Central while the under is 4-1-1 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter. Chicago is 40-12 in Lester’s last 52 starts against a team with a losing record and 8-2 in their last 10 games against the NL East while the under is 14-3 in their last 17 games against a right-handed starter. Chicago is 4-0 in Lester’s last 4 starts against the Mets while the Mets are 0-7 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
Syndergaard and plus money is tempting considering that he’s had a lot of success for New York this season. However, I’m wondering if the air is out of the balloon for New York after completely collapsing on Sunday while the Cubs are hot and are pushing for a division title. Not only are the Cubs the hotter team coming into this one, but they’ve had New York’s number as of late and have had all of the success against the Mets with Lester on the bump as of late. I’ll lay the juice with the Cubs to stay hot with a win on Monday.
