The Seattle Mariners and the Oakland A’s meet in the finale of their crucial four game AL West division set in MLB action on Sunday.
The Seattle Mariners will look to win the series after taking game three on Saturday by a final score of 8-7 on Saturday. Ben Gamel and Jean Segura each had two RBIs, with Gamel going 2 for 4 with a double while Segura went 3 for 4 at the dish. Nelson Cruz and Ryon Healy each had an RBI, while Mitch Haniger and Mike Zunino each added a double. Kyle Seager and Robinson Cano each added a base hit as well to cap off Seattle’s offense in the win. James Paxton got the win to improve to 11-5 this season after allowing three runs on two hits while walking four and striking out ten. Edwin Diaz picked up his 51st save of the year by striking out four over 1.1 innings of relief. Felix Hernandez will start game four and is 8-12 with a 5.49 ERA and 116 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hernandez is 26-12 with a 2.71 ERA and 306 strikeouts against Oakland.

The Oakland A’s will look to salvage a series split after dropping game three in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday. Mark Canha led the A’s by going 1 for 2 with a two-run home run, and three RBIs, while Chris Davis added a solo homer and Marcus Semien added two RBIs with a double. Chad Pinder added a double while Stephen Piscotty and Ramon Laureano added a base knock to cap off Oakland’s offense in the defeat. Liam Hendriks took the loss, falling to 0-1 after giving up two runs in 1.2 innings in the start. Edwin Jackson will start the finale and is 4-3 with a 3.03 ERA and 49 strikeouts this season. In his career, Jackson is 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA and 20 strikeouts against Seattle.
Seattle is 1-6 in Hernandez’s last 7 starts and 7-1 in their last 8 game 4 matchups while the over is 4-0 in Hernandez’s last 4 division starts. Oakland is 6-1 in Jackson’s last 7 starts and 47-20 in their last 67 games overall while the under is 11-5-1 in their last 17 home games. Seattle is 20-6 in Hernandez’s last 26 road starts against Oakland.
Both of these teams need this game, but the difference for me as usual lies in the pitching matchup. Hernandez has solid numbers against Oakland in his career and is showing signs of rebounding from a disastrous season up until this point. However, the Mariners have still lost six of King Felix’s last seven starts. Jackson hasn’t gone past the fifth inning in each of his last three starts, but the A’s just seem to win with Jackson on the mound, winning six of his last seven starts. Jackson also has gone unbeaten against Seattle, allowing just four runs in 28.2 innings, so I’ll side with Oakland for a very important win on Sunday.
