The St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers meet in the finale of their three game set from Comerica Park in MLB action on Sunday.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping game two in disappointing fashion on Saturday, rallying from 3-0 down in the 9th to tie the game before being walked off 4-3. All of St. Louis’ damage on the board was done with the long ball as Paul DeJong hit a solo homer while Marcell Ozuna belted a two run shot to tie the game. Matt Carpenter and Yairo Munoz each had a hit as well as the Cards put up just four hits as a team in the losing effort. Jack Flaherty allowed three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out six over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Bud Norris took the loss to fall to fall to 3-5 this season. John Gant will start the finale and is 6-5 with a 3.19 ERA and 80 strikeouts this season. This will be Gant’s first career start against Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers will look to complete what many would consider to be a shocking sweep of the Cardinals following their walk-off win on Saturday. Jeimer Candelario and Victor Martinez each had an RBI while Victor Reyes went 2 for 4 and Grayson Greiner, Jim Adduci and Nick Castellanos each had a base hit in the winning effort for Detroit. Matt Boyd threw seven innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out 11, not factoring in the decision. Shane Greene got the win in relief, improving to 4-6 with the victory. Michael Fulmer will start game three and is 3-10 with a 4.57 ERA and 105 strikeouts this season. This will be Fulmer’s first career start against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 20-9 in their last 29 games overall and 12-4 in their last 16 road games while the under is 33-15-6 in their last 54 games against the AL Central. Detroit is 6-23 in Fulmer’s last 29 starts and 22-46 in their last 68 games overall while the under is 4-1 in Fulmer’s last 5 home starts. St. Louis is 1-5 in the last 6 meetings and 1-6 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Detroit.
The Cardinals had all of the momentum going into the bottom of the 9th before Bud Norris blew it. And while I’ve been burned by St. Louis in both games of the series so far, I clearly don’t learn my lesson. While plus money with Detroit is nice given how the first two games have gone, but the fact is that the Cardinals are too talented and have too much to play for to be swept here. Detroit has lost each of Fulmer’s last eight starts while Gant has given up two runs or less in seven of his last eight starts. St. Louis and the low line to avoid the sweep has to be the play here.
