The Atlanta Braves and the San Francisco Giants meet in game one of their three game set from AT&T Park in MLB action on Monday.
The Atlanta Braves will look to keep their momentum going after winning their series with Arizona following a 9-5 win in the series finale on Sunday. Ender Inciarte led the Braves with three RBIs along with a home run while Ronald Acuna Jr. and Johan Camargo each had two RBIs and a home run with Acuna Jr. adding a triple as well. Lucas Duda added a pinch-hit home run and Freddie Freeman added an RBI to round out Atlanta’s offense in the winning effort. Ozzie Albies went 2 for 3 with a double while Tyler Flowers and starting pitcher Touki Toussaint each added a base hit in the win. Toussaint allowed two runs on two hits while walking and whiffing five apiece, not factoring in the decision, while Sam Freeman got the win to improve to 3-5 this season. Sean Newcomb will start game one and is 11-8 with a 3.92 ERA and 140 strikeouts this season. This will be Newcomb’s second career start against San Francisco.

The San Francisco Giants will look to bounce back after being swept by the Brewers by a final score of 6-3 in the series finale on Sunday, pushing their losing streak to eight straight games. Gregor Blanco led the way with two RBIs and a home run while Austin Slater added a triple and an RBI to round out San Fran’s scoring in the loss. Brandon Crawford went 2 for 4 and Gorkys Hernandez added a double while Joe Panik, Evan Longoria, Nick Hundley and Madison Bumgarner each added a base hit in the losing effort. Bumgarner took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits while striking out four over six innings to fall to 5-6 this season. Dereck Rodriguez will start game one and is 6-2 with a 2.41 ERA and 78 strikeouts this season. This will be Rodriguez’s first career start against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 6-0 in Newcomb’s last 6 road starts against a team with a losing record and 8-1 in their last 9 road games against a right-handed starter while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. San Francisco is 1-4 in Rodriguez’s last 5 starts and 0-8 in their last 8 games overall while the under is 9-1-1 in their last 11 home games. Atlanta is 5-11 in the last 16 meetings between these two teams in San Francisco.
Newcomb has struggled lately, having an ERA just under eight over his last five starts, allowing three or more runs in four of those five with a shutout sandwiched in the middle. However, those four starts came at home, where Newcomb is a significantly different pitcher, with an ERA over a full run higher than on the road. That shutout start (albeit against Miami) came on the road where Newcomb is 7-3 with a 3.12 ERA this season. Rodriguez has been a bright spot for San Francisco, but the Giants are done like dinner and I think Atlanta adds to their woes with a win in game one on Monday.
