The Miami Marlins and the New York Mets meet in the second half of a doubleheader from Citi Field in MLB action on Thursday.
The Miami Marlins will be looking to at worst salvage a split of the double dip after dropping game two of the four game set on Wednesday in a 13-0 rout. Starling Castro, Bryan Holaday, Brian Anderson, Derek Dietrich and JT Riddle each had a base hit as none of Miami’s five hits went for extra bases in the loss. Trevor Richards took the loss, falling to 3-9 this season after allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits over five innings of work. Sandy Alcantara will start this one and is 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA and 8 strikeouts this season. This will be Alcantara’s second career start against the Mets.

The New York Mets will look to keep their momentum going after a massive win on Wednesday. Jay Bruce led the way with a home run and four RBIs while Amed Rosario also went yard with three RBIs. Jeff McNeil and Dominic Smith each had two RBIs with McNeil hitting a triple while Smith went 2 for 5 with a homer and a double. Jose Reyes added a double and an RBI while starting hurler Zack Wheeler added a pair of base hits. Tomas Nido, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto each contributed a base hit as well to cap off New York’s offense in the win. Wheeler got the win to improve to 11-7 this season after tossing eight shutout innings while striking out seven. Steven Matz will start this game and is 5-11 with a 4.17 ERA and 132 strikeouts this season. In his career, Matz is 3-2 with a 3.06 ERA and 29 strikeouts against Miami.
Miami is 11-26 in their last 37 games overall while the over is 9-1-1 in their last 11 road games against a team with a losing record. New York is 0-5 in Matz’s last 5 division starts and 1-8 in their last 9 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400 while the over is 6-0-1 in their last 7 games overall. The under is 4-0 in Matz’s last 4 starts against Miami.
New York crushed the Fish on Wednesday, but I’m not sure why Matz and the Mets are this much of a favorite. I mean Matz is 1-6 at home this season while Alcantara held New York to just one run in his first start this season. I’ll gladly take the plus money and take a shot with Miami in a battle of two struggling teams with nothing to play for.
