The Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs meet in the opener of a three game NL Central division set from Wrigley Field in MLB action on Friday.
The Cincinnati Reds will look to bounce back after failing to complete the sweep of the Dodgers with an 8-1 loss in the series finale on Wednesday. Jose Peraza’s solo home run accounted for all of Cincy’s scoring in the loss, while Billy Hamilton went 2 for 3 with a triple and a double. Joey Votto and Scooter Gennett each had a base hit as well in the losing effort as the Reds mustered up just five hits as a team. Anthony DeSclafani took the loss, falling to 7-5 this season after allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits while striking out five over 4.2 innings of work. Matt Harvey will start the opener and is 7-8 with a 4.87 ERA and 114 strikeouts this season. In his career, Harvey is 2-1 with a 3.72 ERA and 38 strikeouts against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs will look to keep their momentum going after defeating the Washington Nationals in 10 innings by a final score of 4-3. Javier Baez led the way, going 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs while Victor Caratini added an RBI as well in the win. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo each had two hits while Daniel Murphy added a base knock of his own to round out the Cubs offense in the win. Mike Montgomery allowed two runs on three hits over four innings of work, not factoring in the decision, while Pedro Strop got the win to improve to 6-1 this season and Randy Rosario picked up his first save by closing out the 10th. Cole Hamels will start game one and is 9-9 with a 3.71 ERA and 162 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hamels is 11-1 with a 1.86 ERA and 104 strikeouts against Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is 0-4 in Harvey’s last 4 division starts and 7-19 in their last 26 road games while the over is 4-1-1 in their last 6 games overall. Chicago is 6-2 in Hamels’ last 8 starts and 40-12 in their last 52 home games against a team with a losing record while the under is 11-3 in their last 14 division matchups. Cincinnati is 6-20 in the last 26 meetings between these two teams in Chicago.
The Cubs have taken a slight step back, losing back-to-back starts from Hamels, and had to travel from playing a single game in Washington so there’s reason to think about plus money. However, Hamels is still 4-0 with a 1.42 since joining the Cubs, and oh yeah, did you see Hamels’ career numbers against the Reds? Yes please. Give me the better team with something to play for on the run line to maximize the value of the bet.
