The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees meet in the finale of their three game AL East division set from Yankee Stadium in MLB action on Thursday.
The Boston Red Sox will look to avoid the sweep after dropping game two on Wednesday by a final score of 10-1. Sandy Leon accounted for the lone RBI for Boston, while J.D. Martinez went 3 for 3 and Eduardo Nunez went 2 for 4 with a double. Blake Swihart, Brock Holt and Jackie Bradley Jr. each added a base hit to round out Boston’s offense in the loss. David Price took the loss, falling to 15-7 this season after allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits over 5.1 innings of work. Eduardo Rodriguez will start the finale and is 12-4 with a 3.53 ERA and 133 strikeouts this season. In his career, Rodriguez is 4-3 with a 3.16 ERA and 44 strikeouts against the Yankees.

The New York Yankees will look to complete the sweep after taking game two on Wednesday. Luke Voit and Aaron Hicks each had three RBIs, with Hicks adding a triple while Voit went a perfect 4 for 4 with a pair of home runs. Miguel Andujar went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Greg Bird added an RBI of his own. Andrew McCutchen, Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres each added a base hit to cap off the Bronx Bombers’ offense in the win. Luis Severino got the win to improve to 18-8 this season after allowing one run on six hits while striking out six over seven innings of work. Masahiro Tanaka will start game three and is 12-5 with a 3.47 ERA and 152 strikeouts this season. In his career, Tanaka is 8-4 with a 4.08 ERA and 76 strikeouts against Boston.
Boston is 9-1 in Rodriguez’s last 10 road starts and 21-10 in their last 31 road games while the under is 25-9-1 in Rodriguez’s last 35 division starts. New York is 21-7 in Tanaka’s last 28 home starts against a team with a winning record and 9-2 in their last 11 division matchups while the over is 6-2-1 in Tanaka’s last 9 division starts. New York is 5-2 in Tanaka’s last 7 home starts against Boston.
I don’t think it’s a matter of if but a matter of when Boston will win the AL East division title, but as long as the Yankees have a chance, they’re still in the fight for the division and have played the better baseball in the first two games. With that said, Rodriguez struggled in his last start against New York, following five shutout innings in his first start with five runs in six innings in his last start against the Yankees. Tanaka has won each of his last three starts and held the Red Sox to one run in his last start against Boston, so I’ll take a shot with New York for the sweep on Thursday.
