The San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals meet in game one of a three game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Friday.

The San Francisco Giants will look to finish the season on a high note and play spoiler after failing to complete the sweep of the Padres with an 8-4 loss in the series finale on Wednesday. Chris Stratton started on the mound but tried to help his own cause with the bat, belting a double with three RBIs while Aramis Garcia added a solo home run to round out San Fran’s scoring in the loss. Brandon Crawford went 3 for 4 and Nick Hundley added two hits while Chris Shaw added a base knock to finish off the Giants’ offense in defeat. Stratton took the loss, falling to 10-10 on the year after allowing five runs on six hits over three innings of work Madison Bumgarner will start game one and is 6-6 with a 3.14 ERA and 98 strikeouts this season. In his career, Bumgarner is 4-5 with a 4.61 ERA and 53 strikeouts against St. Louis.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants - 9/21/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to finish off their push for the postseason, currently holding the 2nd wild card spot but failing to complete the sweep themselves as well with a 7-3 loss to Atlanta in their series finale on Wednesday. Harrison Bader hit a solo homer while Jedd Gyorko and Yadier Molina each had an RBI to finish off the Cards’ scoring in the loss. Jose Martinez went 2 for 4 and Paul DeJong added a double while Marcell Ozuna and Patrick Wisdom each had a base knock in the losing effort. Jack Flaherty took the loss, falling to 8-8 this season after allowing five runs on five hits while striking out six over 4.2 innings of work. John Gant will start game one and is 7-6 with a 3.53 ERA and 90 strikeouts this season. This will be Gant’s second career start against San Francisco.

San Francisco is 0-7 in their last 7 road games against a team with a winning home record and 2-7 in their last 9 road games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 road games against a right-handed starter. St. Louis is 3-7 in Gant’s last 10 home starts and 16-7 in their last 23 games following a loss while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. The over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in St. Louis.

The plus money with the Giants is tempting considering Bumgarner is still a staff ace and plus money with an ace holds tremendous value when Gant struggled against the Dodgers in his last turn. However, MadBum isn’t pitching like an ace overall this season and has had his share of struggles as well against the Cardinals. The difference for me in this matchup is Gant has a strong offense behind him to pick up the pieces if he falls down, while the Giants continue to be inconsistent. The Cardinals also are the only team in this matchup that NEED a win, so I’ll lay the juice with St. Louis here.
