The Los Angeles Angels and the Houston Astros meet in the finale of their three game AL West division set from Minute Maid Park on Sunday.
The Los Angeles Angels will look to bounce back after giving up double digit runs for the 4th straight game in a 10-5 loss on Saturday that saw the Halos blow a 5-1 8th inning lead.Mike Trout led the Angels with a three run home run, while Andrelton Simmons and Francisco Arcia each had an RBI double to round out L.A.’s scoring in the loss. Justin Upton went 2 for 3 while Shohei Ohtani added a base hit to round out the Halos’ offense in the losing effort. Jaime Barria allowed one run on four hits over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision while Ty Buttrey took the loss to fall to 0-1 this season. Tyler Skaggs will start the finale and is 8-8 with a 3.69 ERA and 126 strikeouts this season. In his career, Skaggs is 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA and 30 strikeouts against Houston.

The Houston Astros will look to stay hot and finish off the sweep after their come from behind win on Saturday. George Springer, Jose Altuve and Evan Gattis each had two RBIs, with Altuve’s coming on a two run home run in the 9-run 8th inning. Yuli Gurriel went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI while Brian McCann and Tyler White each added an RBI to round out Houston’s scoring in the win. Josh Reddick and Alex Bregman each contributed a base hit to cap off Houston’s offense. Justin Verlander threw six one hit shutout innings, striking out 11, not factoring in the decision. Collin McHugh ended up with the win to improve to 6-2 this season. Charlie Morton will start game three and is 15-3 with a 3.15 ERA and 195 strikeouts this season. In his career, Morton is 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 24 strikeouts against the Angels.
Los Angeles is 2-7 in their last 9 games overall and 9-4 in Skaggs’ last 13 road starts while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 road games. Houston is 6-0 in Morton’s last 6 starts against a team with a losing record and 22-7 in their last 29 games overall while the under is 4-1 in Morton’s last 5 division starts. Los Angeles is 3-11 in the last 14 meetings between these two teams.
Just when you think the Angels may actually get a win after holding Houston to just one run through seven innings and putting up a five spot in the 8th, the Angels go ahead and do what the Angels do and that’s choke it up and allow the opposition to put up a crooked number in the bottom half of the same inning. The Angels have now allowed 52 runs in their last four games. That’s ridiculous. And it doesn’t help that Skaggs (while throwing three shutout innings in his last start) had allowed 17 runs in two starts before his last turn up. The Angels simply can’t be trusted right now so I’ll side with Houston on the run line to complete the sweep.
