The St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants lock up in the finale of their three game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Sunday.
The San Francisco Giants will look to avoid the sweep after dropping three in a row with a 5-4 loss in extra innings on Saturday. Aramis Garcia went 4 for 4 with two RBIs, while Joe Panik went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Gregor Blanco chipped in a run as well in the losing effort. Hunter Pence had two hits while Alen Hanson and starting pitcher Dereck Rodriguez each added a base knock to round out San Fran’s offense in defeat. Rodriguez gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings, not factoring in the decision, while Mark Melancon took the loss to fall to 0-3 this season. Andrew Suarez will start game three and is 7-11 with a 4.24 ERA and 125 strikeouts this season. This will be Suarez’s first career start against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to finish off the sweep and continue their playoff push after winning game two on Saturday. Yadier Molina led the way, going 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs while Tyler O’Neill added a solo homer and Paul DeJong went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Adam Wainwright added an RBI to help his own cause on the mound, while Matt Carpenter, Jedd Gyorko and Harrison Bader each added a base hit to cap off St. Louis’ offense. Wainwright gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out six over 6.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision, while Carlos Martinez got the win to improve to 8-6 on the year. Miles Mikolas will start game three and is 16-4 with a 3.01 ERA and 132 strikeouts this season. This will be Mikolas’ first career start against San Francisco.
San Francisco is 0-7 in their last 7 games against the NL Central and 4-14 in their last 18 games overall while the under is 4-0-1 in Suarez’s last 5 starts overall. St. Louis is 21-7 in Mikolas’ last 28 starts and 8-2 in their last 10 home games against a left-handed starter while the under is 9-4 in Mikolas’ last 13 home starts. San Francisco is 3-7 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.
Mikolas has been one of the most underrated pitchers in all of baseball this season as the Cardinals just seem to win when this guy takes the mound and while he’s perfect at 9-0 on the road in 15 starts, Mikolas’ ERA is over 1.5 runs better at home where he has a 2.23 ERA and a .237 batting average against this season. We can’t say the same for Suarez, who has allowed over two runs more on the road with an ERA well over five this season, in addition to a Giants team that is stumbling towards the finish line. I’ll side with St. Louis for the sweep on the run line to get some extra value out of the bet.
