The Houston Astros and the Kansas City Royals will kick off their weekend MLB set on Friday.
The Astros are fresh off a set against the A’s. After a 15-0 Monday win, Houston lost the next two games 21-7 and 5-3. In the Thursday finale, the Astros lost 3-2.
For Friday’s game, Houston will send out Gerrit Cole in the start. Across his 184.1 innings and 16-5 mark so far, Cole has a 2.73 ERA with 281 Ks and 43 BBs.
Over on the Royals’ side, they’re coming out of a series versus the White Sox. KC split the first two games of that set, then in the rubber match on Thursday the Royals won 6-3.
In Friday’s matchup, the Royals will go with Danny Duffy to start. Over 112.2 innings and a 6-6 record, Duffy has a 4.71 ERA with 98 Ks and 41 BBs.
The Astros are 41-10 in their last 51 in game one of a series and 47-20 in the last 67 Friday games. Houston is 4-0 in Cole’s last four road starts and 6-0 in his last six with four days’ rest.
Meanwhile, the Royals are 4-10 in their last 14 in game one of a series and 6-1 in Duffy’s last seven starts. KC is 2-6 in Duffy’s last eight starts with five days’ rest and they’re 2-6 in their last eight Friday games.
Cole has eight quality starts in his last nine outings, and only gave up two earned in one of those eight. Needless to say he’s cooking right now and continues to rack up wins.
As for Duffy, he’s got consecutive quality starts to his credit, but it’s worth noting those came versus Baltimore and Miami. I expect Duffy to post a solid outing here but still I’m pretty firmly on the Astros in this one.
