The San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies will match up on the MLB circuit Sunday to continue their series.
In the Friday opener of this set, the Rockies managed a 10-8 win. On Saturday, we had a pretty crazy game, as the Padres scored five runs in the eighth inning to nearly complete a comeback. The Rockies held on however, and squeaked through 11-10.
For the Sunday game, the Padres will send out Cal Quantrill in the start. Across 95.0 innings and a 6-7 mark so far, Quantrill has a 5.12 ERA with 80 Ks and 25 BBs.
Over on the Rockies’ side, they’re going with Chi Chi Gonzalez on Sunday. Over 48.0 innings and a 1-6 record this year, Gonzalez has a 6.56 ERA with 27 Ks and 25 BBs.
The Padres are 4-0 in their last four Sunday games and 7-3 in their last 10 in game three of a series. San Diego is 0-4 in Quantrill’s last four starts and 1-5 in his last six in game three of a series.
Meanwhile, the Rockies are 0-5 in their last five in game three of a series and 1-9 in Gonzalez’s last 10 starts on grass. Colorado is 0-4 in Gonzalez’s last four starts with four days’ rest and 0-6 in his last six versus the NL West.
It’s been a tough three starts for Quantrill. Over his last trio he’s given up 24 earned runs in 13.2 innings of work. He’s also lost his last four outings and hasn’t gotten a W wince August 14.
As for Gonzalez, he was a little shaky last month but is currently sitting on consecutive quality starts with three earned in 12.1 innings. I have to stick with Gonzalez and the Rockies in this one.
