The San Diego Padres and the Milwaukee Brewers meet in game one of a four game set in MLB action from Miller Park on Monday night.
The San Diego Padres will be out to snap a four game losing streak after being swept by the Colorado Rockies including a 10-5 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Wil Myers and Josh Naylor each had a home run and two RBIs with Myers going 2 for 3 with a double as well. Luis Urias had a solo home run and a double to cap off San Diego’s scoring as a team in the losing effort. Austin Allen, Ty France and Eric Hosmer each had a base hit to round out San Diego’s offense as a team in the defeat. Cal Quantrill took the loss, falling to 6-8 on the year after allowing four runs on six hits while walking and striking out three apiece. Garrett Richards will make his regular season debut here after going 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA and 87 strikeouts for the Angels last season. This will be Richards’ first career start against Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Brewers will look to stay hot after winning their series against St. Louis over the weekend, taking their three game set with a 9th win in 10 games following a 7-6 win in Sunday’s rubber match. Ryan Braun had a home run and four RBIs while Cory Spangenberg went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Lorenzo Cain had an RBI to cap off Milwaukee’s scoring as a team in the win while Eric Thames went 2 for 4 with a double and Tyler Austin added a two-bagger as well. Yasmani Grandal, Hernan Perez, Chase Anderson and Keston Hiura each added a base hit to finish off the Brew Crew’s offense as a team in the win. Anderson gave up one run on one hit while striking out six over four innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Matt Albers got the win in relief to improve to 7-5 on the year while Josh Hader closed out a shaky 9th for his 33rd save of the year. Zach Davies will start game one and is 9-7 with a 3.77 ERA and 94 strikeouts this season. In his career, Davies is 3-0 with a 3.58 ERA and 22 strikeouts against San Diego.
San Diego is 0-4 in their last 4 games overall and 0-6 in their last 6 road games while the under is 8-2-1 in their last 11 games against the NL Central. Milwaukee is 14-5 in Davies’ last 19 starts against a team with a losing record and 9-1 in their last 10 games overall while the under is 9-3 in their last 12 home games. Milwaukee is 4-1 in Davies’ last 5 starts against San Diego.
It’s nice to see Richards back on the mound after missing most of the season with injuries. However, it’s hard to make a case for a pitcher making his regular season debut this late in the season, for a struggling Padres team that can’t keep runs off of the board and got swept by one of the bottom teams in the NL. Davies has had issues of his own, especially at home, but he’s had success against the Padres in his career and has the hotter team behind him, so I’ll lay the juice with the Brewers for another key win here.
