The Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays meet in game one of a three game AL East division series from Rogers Centre in MLB action on Friday.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to keep their momentum going after winning three straight and six of their last seven games following a 4-0 win over the Yankees on Wednesday. Joey Wendle and Avisail Garcia each had a solo home run while Matt Duffy had a double and an RBI and Brandon Lowe added an RBI of his own to finish off the Rays’ offense as a team in the victory. Austin Meadows, Ji-Man Choi, Kevin Kiermaier and Willy Adames each had a base hit to finish off the Rays’ offense as a team in the winning effort. Charlie Morton got the win to improve to 16-6 on the year after thiteming six shutout innings, giving up just one hit while walking three and striking out nine. Tyler Glasnow will start game one and is 6-1 with a 1.92 ERA and 72 strikeouts this season. In his career, Glasnow is 0-2 with a 7.58 ERA and 28 strikeouts against Toronto.
The Toronto Blue Jays will look to play spoiler after winning their series with Baltimore, taking Wednesday’s series finale by a final score of 3-2. All of Toronto’s scoring came via the long ball as itemdy Tellez belted a pair of solo home runs and Billy McKinney had a solo shot of his own. Teoscar Hernandez and Derek Fisher each had a base hit to finish off Toronto’s offense as a team in the victory. Jacob Waguespack got the win to improve to 5-5 on the year after tossing six shutout innings, giving up just four hits while striking out five. Ken Giles closed out the 9th, striking out the side for his 22nd save of the season. T.J. Zeuch will start game one and is 1-1 with a. 4.58 ERA and 16 strikeouts this season. This will be Zeuch’s first career start against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 5-1 in Glasnow’s last 6 starts and 20-7 in their last 27 division games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 road games. Toronto is 7-3 in their last 10 games overall and 25-52 in their last 77 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 5-1-1 in their last 7 home games. Tampa Bay is 26-10 in the last 36 meetings between these two teams and 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Toronto while the Rays are also 1-4 in Glasnow’s last 5 starts against Toronto.
The plus money with Toronto is worth a look as Zeuch has been decent in his limited appearances so far and Glasnow has had major issues against Toronto in his career. However, Cleveland slipped up against the White Sox on Thursday, and the Rays can clinch their playoff spot with a win and another Indians loss. I just think that the severity of the situation isn’t lost on Tampa Bay, and I think the Rays put their best foot forward here. The juice is heavy, but I think Tampa Bay has to be the play here.
