The Rakuten Monkeys (9-2) and the Chinatrust Brothers (5-7) will meet on Friday, May 1st, for a 1st Stage regular-season matchup in CPBL play. The Monkeys have been the team to beat so far this season, but can the Brothers pull off the upset?
Rakuten is coming off a 5-3 victory over the Fubon Guardians in their last game on Tuesday. The Monkeys were able to take a 4-0 lead by the end of the 6th inning, and despite giving up two runs in their next two innings, the Monkeys were able to secure the victory and earn their league-leading ninth win of the season. In fact, Rakuten is currently the only team with a winning record (above .500), as the next closest team to them is the Uni Lions with a record of 6-7.
The Chinatrust Brothers lost an ugly one to the Uni Lions in their last game on Wednesday, 12-6. After a first-inning five-run explosion from the Lions, Uni was able to coast to victory. The Brothers starter Y.C. Liao was taken out before the end of the first inning, and all five runs given up were his responsibility. The bats have started slow for Chinatrust, and when they have allowed 20 runs in their last two games, the recipe for success is not looking too bright. Chinatrust's bullpen was used heavily in their last two games, therefore it will be interesting to see how their manager deals with a tired pen in a game against the league's best.
Rakuten has proven all season long that they can score in bunches. With a struggling pitching staff in Chinatrust, I expect the Monkeys bats to be hot early and often. Chinatrust was able to score six runs in their loss to Uni, but they came too late in the ball game. In order for Chinatrust to win this game, they need to take an early lead.
With having the day off on Wednesday, I expect the Monkeys to get off to a hot start and never look back. Chinatrust has not pitched well as a team in recent games, and with a tired bullpen, there is no way I can trust them in this one. I will take the Rakuten Monkeys on the run line, -1.5, in this game, with solid +105 value.
