Rakuten Monkeys (-185) - Chinatrust Brothers (+134)
The Rakuten Monkeys (10-3) and the Chinatrust Brothers (6-8) will meet on Sunday, May 3rd, for a 1st Stage regular-season matchup in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL). These two teams have split the first two games of their three-game set, so who will win the rubber match?
After a tough loss, Rakuten wasted no time on Saturday in getting their revenge with a 16-11 win over Chinatrust. After being down 3-0 early, a 7-run third inning propelled the Monkeys to their league-leading 10th victory in the CPBL. A five-run top of the ninth was not enough for the Brothers to make a comeback, as they earned their eighth loss of the season.
Chinatrust's pitching and defense have looked very shaky as of late, as the Brothers have allowed 41 runs in their last four games overall. That means that Chinatrust has averaged ten runs allowed in each of these games, which is not a recipe for success, even in an offensive-minded league like the CPBL. I am not too sure that this team can snap out of it on the pitching side, as the bullpen has been totally scorched in almost all facets. A much-needed day off is coming after this game against Rakuten for the Brothers.
Rakuten is feeling good at 10-3, seven games above .500 and currently owning the league's best record by four games over the Uni Lions (7-8). Rakuten has also given up quite too many runs in recent games, allowing 21 runs to these Brothers so far in the two games this series. If Rakuten can avoid allowing the big inning, their bats can carry them in almost any contest.
I expect Rakuten to torch the Brothers' pitching staff yet again in this one, as Chinatrust is in dire straits when it comes to getting their pitchers some rest. If Rakuten can get at the Brothers' starter early, this game will be over...early. Chinatrust cannot afford another early departure from their starter, especially in the first three innings of play. Unfortunately for them, I see Rakuten going for the final kill, and taking down the Brothers in game three of this series. I will take Rakuten and lay the 1.5 runs, just as I did yesterday.
