The Chinatrust Brothers (9-10) and the Rakuten Monkeys (13-4) will meet on Sunday, May 10th for a 1st Stage regular-season matchup in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL). The first two games of this series were more low-scoring than usual; will this game be any different?
In the second game of this three-game series, Rakuten was victorious 6-3. The Monkeys were able to overcome an early 1-0 deficit by scoring two runs in the second and three in the third. Their four-run lead shrunk to two when Chinatrust scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Rakuten added to their lead with one in the eighth, and they coasted to victory. Rakuten is now 13-4 with a 5.0 game lead of first place in the CPBL.
Chinatrust’s bats were quieted all night long from the Rakuten pitching staff. A sight that is not too often to see in the Chinese Pro Baseball League. The loss for the Brothers snaps a three-game win streak that Chinatrust had built, a streak that got their record back to .500 at 9-9. Now at 9-10, the Brothers will look to win the rubber match of this series and get within another game of the league’s best Monkeys team.
This is a big game for both teams, as Chinatrust would love to get back to .500 at 10-10, and they would also really benefit from a series win over Rakuten. Rakuten themselves want to extend their league lead on the rest of the teams, but most importantly, the team directly behind them in Chinatrust. Rakuten has not been as electric as they could be in recent games, but that has not stopped them from stringing together a good amount of wins.
I expect this game will be closer than what the Win Line suggests. Chinatrust is currently a +202 dog on the WL, while Rakuten’s price sits at -278, a very steep number for even a team of their caliber. I do expect Rakuten to win this game and the three-game series, but I do think this game stays close for a while. Although the first two games of this series were low-scoring, I expect both offenses to break out in this game. With both pitching staffs having to work a lot recently, I think the bats come alive for both squads, so I will take the over 13.5 runs.
