The Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox meet Monday night in MLB exhibition action at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The Chicago Cubs lost their preseason opener Sunday with a 7-3 loss to the White Sox, a game they had a 2-0 lead entering the fifth inning. In the losing effort, Josh Phegley and Jason Kipnis combined for two hits and two RBI while Kyle Hendricks allowed three runs and six hits in 4.2 innings of work. The Chicago Cubs bullpen simply wasn’t able to get the job done in their first exhibition contest and it’s not what you want to see with the regular season right around the corner. Yu Darvish gets the ball tonight for the Chicago Cubs.
The Chicago White Sox offense exploded in the fifth inning with six runs to take complete control of the contest. In the victory, Yasmani Grandal and Luis Robert combined for three hits and three RBI while Drew Anderson allowed two runs and two hits in three innings of work. The Chicago White Sox bullpen also looked solid, allowing just one run and three hits in six innings. It’s just one game and it doesn’t mean anything in terms of the standings, but it’s a positive sign for a White Sox club that’s itching to finally breakthrough. Dallas Keuchel gets the ball tonight for the Chicago White Sox.
It's going to be tough to find trends and consistent play in spring training, as every game is a completely different animal and few things make sense. However, the Chicago White Sox are a team that's heading in the right direction rather quickly and a club I wouldn't be shocked if they made the postseason. Keuchel was starting to figure things out as he knocked the rust off, while Darvish can get hit hard when he's not all there. The Chicago Cubs seem to be a bit hungover since winning that World Series, and they don't have that same swagger to them now that Joe Maddon is gone. The Cubs simply are no longer the sexy pick or a team you can trust night in and night out.
I'm very high on the White Sox, and I'll back them to win another exhibition game.
