The Seattle Mariners and the the Houston Astros meet Friday in MLB action from Minute Maid Park.
Seattle is coming off an ugly 68-94 overall record in 2019. That result left the Mariners in fifth place in the American League West and out of the playoffs once more. As for the Astros, they managed a nice 107-55 regular season record last year, winning the American League West. Houston made it all the way to Game 7 of the World Series, where they were dispatched by the Nationals. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.
We haven’t gotten to see much of the Mariners since spring training was shut down back in March. They’re going to be a tough group to pin down until we get to see the team on the field in a real game. Looking at the projected lineup however, there aren’t too many bright spots. Kyle Seager and maybe Dan Vogelbach are probably the only guys in the lineup who could potentially produce double-digit home runs. The batting averages will also be pretty uninspiring here; most Seattle players will probably land in the .230-.240 range. It’s going to be an offensive struggle.
Marco Gonzales will take the mound for the Mariners in the Friday opener. In 2019, Gonzales posted a 16-13 record with a 3.99 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 203.0 total innings. A year before that, Gonzales managed an even 4.00 ERA, so if he can stay in that range this year he should be effective. Trouble is, he won’t have much run support.
Over on the Astros’ side, they managed to fit in a couple of exhibition games against the Royals this week. On Monday, Houston took a 6-3 victory then repeated that outcome Tuesday with a high-flying 15-6 win. Sure, it was just a couple exhibition games versus a bad KC team, but it hints at Houston’s potential for scoring runs this season. The offense should be fun to watch once again.
On the hill for the Astros in this 2020 season opener will be ace Justin Verlander. He’s coming off a solid 2019, going 21-6 with a 3.58 ERA and an even 300 strikeouts in 223.0 innings. With a potent offense behind him, Verlander will be tough to stop in 2020. Even in a shortened season, he could potentially hit 6-7 wins.
The Mariners are 4-0 in their last four road games versus a right-handed starter and 33-69 in their last 102 games as an underdog. Seattle is 22-47 in their last 69 road games and 2-5 in their last seven overall.
Meanwhile, Houston is 22-5 in their last 27 home games versus a left-handed starter and 46-12 in the last 58 in game one of a series. The Astros are 37-14 in their last 51 home games and 52-21 in their last 73 Friday games.
Pick: I have to go Astros. Granted, the line is super thick—almost bordering on ridiculous. That said, I don’t see a whole lot of ways that Seattle could win this game. Even if Houston gets very conservative with Verlander and goes to the bullpen early I don’t see the Mariners keeping up on the scoreboard.
