The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets meet Friday in MLB action at Citi Field.
The Atlanta Braves won the NL East with 97 games last season and enter this year as a solid World Series contender. The Braves did lose a lot of key players from last years roster, but that batting lineup is as deadly as ever when you add Marcell Ozuna and Travis d'Arnaud to group that already included Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman. The Braves need to find starting pitching depth, as they were 12th in ERA, 17th in WHIP and 21st in strikeouts per nine innings. Seeing veterans Julio Teheran and Dallas Keuchel leave probably doesn’t help matters. Still, the Braves are a fun bunch capable of going toe-to-toe with any team in baseball. Mike Soroka gets the ball for the Braves, and he was 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA and 142 strikeouts last season. Soroka is 4-0 with a 2.73 ERA and 22 strikeouts in his career against the Mets.
The New York Mets have been a disappointing team the last couple of years and hope they can finally get the train rolling in the right direction. The Mets offense seems to be in good hands with guys such as Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso entering their prime, and a full season of Yoenis Céspedes could go a very long way. The issue for the Mets has been getting a healthy starting rotation and that is still the issue this season with Marcus Stroman and Noah Syndergaard on the IL. The additions of Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha does help prevent the sky from falling, but the Mets this season will never know their true potential. Jacob deGrom gets the ball for the Mets, and he was 11-8 with a 2.43 ERA and 255 strikeouts last season. deGrom is 7-7 with a 1.97 ERA and 163 strikeouts in his career against the Braves.
The Braves are 1-4 in their last 5 games as an underdog, 1-4 in their last 5 road games and 22-8 in their last 30 Friday games. The Mets are 5-1 in their last 6 home games, 4-1 in their last 5 Friday games and 35-16 in their last 51 games as a favorite. The under is 5-0 in Braves last 5 Friday games. The over is 4-1 in Mets last 5 Friday games. The under is 15-6-1 in the last 22 meetings in New York.
Soroka was solid last season and he's pitching for the better team in the Braves with a scary lineup backing him up. However, we're getting an ace pitcher in deGrom at a very cheap price. Last season, deGrom had a 2.50 ERA and .189 allowed batting average at home. You usually don't get one of the best pitchers in baseball at prices this cheap.
Give me the Mets.
